My One Regret

posted by on December 31 at 11:24 AM

I regret not having read Badiou’s Ethics: An Essay on the Understanding of Evil
..before making Zoo, a film that currently has one of its best critical examinations in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Badiou’s concept of the truth as an event that occurs on the edge of (and presents a void to) the state of a situation, what the Greeks called “nomos”—the order, the rule, the custom, the standard, the society of opinions—better expresses the spatial organization or geographic location of the Enumclaw Horse Sex Case than Plato’s Phaedrus, one of the two books that heavily influenced the film’s structure and concepts. (The other important book is Foucault’s History of Sexuality: Volume One.)

Or to parody Sartre: nous ne sommes tant libres qu'en train d'Ítre sodomiser par un cheval.

I regret the above spelling of San Francisco.

The author also does a fine job deconstructing Manufactured Landscapes. And the DVD comes with extra features that made me appreciate the film even more--interviews with Baichwal and Burtynsky, a Burtynsky slide show with commentary by the photographer, etc. Highly recommended.

Humans! Pure hippophiliacs hippomerdity.

No matter how many French and Greek intellectuals you cite, you will never understand the true "true" "meaning" -- much less the true, true, true, "true," true "meaning" -- of fucking a horse.

(I mean spatially and geographically, of course; next to the void.)

My one regret is that I continually read the post when I see Charles Mudede in the byline.

Even Thrasymachus wouldn't fuck a horse.

Anyway, I have this treatment I'm shopping around where the Enumclaw horse-fuckers get water-boarded by an evil alliance of east Pierce County trailer trash and Hilltop Crips. Basically the evil alliance is trying to get the horse-fuckers to admit that there's no contradiction between Foucault's support of the Iranian Revolution and his critique of the liberatory discourse of sexuality. But the horse-fuckers steadfastly refuse to admit this! Then, after a time, they start vomiting into the inrushing torrent of water and feel like they're about to die, which leads to the dramatic climax, where they do admit that no such contradiction exists. But then in a coda (interspliced with final credits) the shocked audience sees the evil alliance continue to waterboard the Enumclaw horse-fuckers, because they are really not Foucauldians at all, but strict Althusserians! This of course opens the door for a sequel of Godfather II proportions.
