Larry Craig’s Not Gay

posted by on December 2 at 11:21 AM

But all the men he’s slept with are. When news of his toilet-cruising arrest broke, Craig accused the Idaho Statesman of persecuting him. Why, if it hadn’t been for the Statesman asking all those impertinent questions about Craig’s secret gay sex life, he wouldn’t have panicked and pleaded guilty to seeking anonymous gay sex in an airport toilet. I suppose the editors of the Statesman figured that, shit, if they’re going to accused of a witch hunt the might as well conduct one. Hence today’s front-page story.

David Phillips. Mike Jones. Greg Ruth. Tom Russell.

Four gay men, willing to put their names in print and whose allegations can’t be disproved, have come forward since news of U.S. Sen. Larry Craig’s guilty plea. They say they had sex with Craig or that he made a sexual advance or that he paid them unusual attention.

They are telling their stories now because they are offended by Craig’s denials, including his famous statement, “I am not gay, I never have been gay.” Those words, spoken on live national TV on Aug. 28, are now memorialized on a just-released-for-Christmas Talking Senator Larry Craig Action Figure.

Just to twist the knife—and, no doubt, make it harder for Craig to deny the allegations—the Statesman also posted audio tapes of its interviews with all four men. Gotta love this note from the editors:

Audio clip disclaimer: Some of the audio interview excerpts contain explicit descriptions of sex not appropriate for children and listeners who find such content offensive. The Statesman provides the excerpts so Idahoans can hear these accounts and decide for themselves about accusations against Sen. Craig.

So if you’re under 18 or listening to detailed descriptions of the sex life of a wrinkled old self-hating bigot is illegal where you live, don’t click here.

so old news, except for the straight voyeurs

Craig been foolin' around since grade school, just like you Dan, what is the news?

his business, isn't it?

wonder if that Idaho rag is going to detail the sex life of all the elected officials in the state? just the nut case queer ones, how sweet

what the hell is their motive, the Idaho Queer Inquirer

so now we know paid whores did him, what news, they DO anyone with the cash

this is a modern version of the Boys of Boise, homosexual panic stories by the Boise news rag

Posted by Marty | December 2, 2007 11:56 AM

I take it that's a different Mike Jones from Ted Haggard's pal?

Posted by Nat | December 2, 2007 12:28 PM

His business??

He lied, over and over; defamed gays in genreal and the MN cops in particular; committed multiple crimes (prostitution and public sex in bathrooms); he's come on to lobbyists and younger activists; he's also falsely swearing in court now, in his appeal.

I give him to 9:15 am Boise time tomorrow morning before he is forced to resign.
Can Slog start a pool on that??

This made my day.....and to think I was feeling bummed out earlier...

Posted by Dianna | December 2, 2007 12:33 PM

Corrected, Otto, and fuck off.

Posted by Dan Savage | December 2, 2007 12:35 PM

Same Mike Jones.

It's not our business when a gay man has gay sex. It IS our business when an anti-gay hypocrite who opposes civil rights for men who have gay sex has gay sex. Including more airport toilet stall solicitations.

Posted by Fnarf | December 2, 2007 12:36 PM

Marty, you think it isn't my business when a man who repeatedly has sex with other men spends most of his working political career bashing gay people, and opposing any laws that might grant civil rights to gay people? When a right wing moral values politician who repeatedly has sex with other men denies it publicly? With his WIFE standing right next to him?

You're a dipshit.

So where can I get a talking Larry Craig action figure? Does it have a string in the back that you pull to make it talk? Or does pulling the string make it tap its foot? Is it part of a Talking Republican-Sex-Scandal Doll collection that comes with lingerie, diapers and other accessories?

Speaking of which, Dan, last week you challenged anyone with conclusive evidence about Trent Lott's alleged Boy Toy to come forward. I am assuming you would have let us know the minute you got something, but I haven't seen anything. Any updates or can we just conclude those rumors are as dead as a doornail? (As disappointing as that is)

Posted by RainMan | December 2, 2007 1:36 PM

I love it when Dan Savage tells people to fuck off. It's only slightly lame when it isn't directed at me.

Posted by Mr. Poe | December 2, 2007 1:51 PM

Sue, he is a political pig.

This is rank homophobia, they are not engrossed in his politics. Those are the same as his.

Old news, and he next Republican from Idaho, believe it or not, could be worse.

You all must be bored, it feels like tearing the wings off flies.

And of course his wife knew. And for the poor stupid fuckhead above who is most likely straight, Craig broke no laws in the john in MSP. None. Foot tapping is not illegal and neither is trolling for sex any where a good fag wishes. Get over your prudish missionary position assumptions.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz story for me, I have never been obsessed with others sex lives, even the fuckhead right wingers.

And the Idaho Statesman uses homosexual panic to sell papers. Feels so good to them.

I just had a thought, Craig had more adventure in his trolling than most of the twinks posting here. He did it, most of you all just have one track fantasies, and piss and moan about how little sex you have. For an old guy closet case, he seems to have been pushing it pretty well.

Posted by Marty | December 2, 2007 2:06 PM

Older guy, looks faded, lots of money, gay or straight, PAYS for sex. What is the big deal?

So what? Among my friends there are three or four sex workers, and a couple of them make BIG money, $500.00 for two hours.

Dishing Craig's horrid politics is one thing, but, I get the impression some of these posters are not very hip when it come to pay for sex.

Let's face it, as we post, hotel rooms all over Seattle are bing used for sex, all variations, and for cash as well.

I like whores. Pardon, sex workers.

And I would never believe any of them.

And the only thing worse in Idaho than a homo of any stripe is a virile black man who likes white women. Don't be too eager to join the Idaho power newspaper to tar and feather a tired old closet case.

@6 That is why I love you. Now I know how to respond to people who hate all my daily typos.
That just cracked me up!

#2 Marty dearest: When a PULBIC OFFICIAL on the PUBLIC payroll acts in an illegal way (gay sex is not the issue, bathroom sex is) his illegal act becomes public knowledge. Just as when a private citizen walks into a 7-11 and holds it up at gun point. (The gun is not the issue, the store is not the issue) taking what is not yours is the issue. Craig acted illegally and hence the act becomes public in all it's glory.

Sargon Bighorn @ 14,

and on that note does anybody know if Rudy Julie-Annie is going to get charged with anything for putting his fling on the taxpayer's tab?

Posted by Y.F. | December 2, 2007 3:47 PM

Also, to Bob (used to live in Bellevue) @ 12,

"I like whores. Pardon, sex workers. And I would never believe any of them."

Yes, exactly, most people wouldn't believe anything a "whore" would say, but Larry Flynt is offering $$$$ for proof of Republican kink. That's why sex worker's should be videotaping and collecting the Jiz-stained sheets of their tricks. For the day they wish to retire. They (the sex worker) would get a nice nest-egg for their retirement, the press would be gettng a hellava good story (with tangible proof!), and the hypocrites would be getting their comeupance. Sounds like an all around winning idea to me.

Posted by Y.F. | December 2, 2007 3:58 PM

Sargon - you are a fool.

There was no sex, none. What planet are you on? Even the ACLU says nothing illegal happened.

A tapping foot - my god, you have an exaggerated puritan sense of what is illegal.

Communication to get the attention of someone who might be interested - illegal - god, all bars are in trouble. Winks, nods, slogans, " hey dude, what's happen'", all illegal because they might lead to blow jobs.

You are a fool.

What is illegal is to display your private parts, yes yours, and mine, and Craig's. NOT signals between consenting adults.

Get on the clue bus. You are in concert with the radical right and the homophobes, YES gay men can troll/cruise just like straight people of every age and nature, young and old, rich and poor, do every minute of the day, everywhere, everywhere.

And where the fuck did you get a gun story in to this, honey, dearest, only foot tapping. And the very cute cop, sitting on the next shitter, there only to entrap, tapped back.

The Idaho Statesmen sucks dick in hell.

Posted by Mr. Poe | December 2, 2007 4:39 PM

Marty : die. Now. Please.

Posted by Wowza | December 2, 2007 5:58 PM

Wowsa - above - Sure, Marty is dead - right. Die is a bit violent, how about simmer down a bit?

Look, I detest the right wing. My politics are very left, left of most posters here. And my life is about sexual freedom, for gay men and women who have been put in a box by mainstream male rules and regs. about their sexual needs for too long.

But I don't think there is any gain to join the right wing and clamor about Larry Craig and his closet, nor his trolling, nor who he sucked or who fucked him, or what he said to his wife.

Attack his politics, elect a liberal Democrat in Idaho and in the process be careful you don't play shill for the right, even if it gives a bit of satisfaction cause you do not like the man.

It will be interesting for the knee jerkers here when the ACLU joins his suit.

Now off to the Cuff, trying to find a Larry Craig type, 20 years younger, a well hung closet case all repressed and horny and juicy beyond belief - I will need to help him with many hours of intense personal "therapy" - maybe 12 hours or so, greet the dawn for the last round. He can be from Idaho or Montana, yes indeed - western boots and western cut jacket anyone? Oh those rancher shoulders, trim waist and great ass ... a real score would be Mormon underwear ... just topping on the night ... will get a pic of the underwear for Slog.

Cheers. And simmer down is better than die, you all.

Posted by Marty | December 2, 2007 6:28 PM

Marty Marty Marty, you are at odds with law enforcement officers' reports not me sugar. I did not arrest Craig, I did not charge him with some "lewd act". I don't think cock was sucked in the stall, but Craig DID ADMIT I'll repeat that just in case you missed it, DID ADMIT wrong doing. He then paid the fine associated with that wrong doing. So all I'm saying honey is that Craig HIS SEFF said he done wrong.

Posted by Sargon Bighorn | December 2, 2007 7:42 PM

Well, this is interesting. I just read that one of the escorts that Craig fucked is 50 years old. The sex took place a few years ago, so the 'ho claims.

Still, maybe Craig deserves kudos for liking/licking the old guys, very un common in the 'mo 'ho business.

And this escort who got paid for blow jobs when he was approaching 50 finked on the guy.... geez, what a bad ass he is.

As above, wowsa, wowsa.

Posted by zak - yes it is my real name | December 2, 2007 7:44 PM

@22: Hey, some older guys are hot, and some are not! Maybe this escort fell into the category of being a hot older guy. One of my friends is 49 (only 4 years younger than my parents), and I wouldn't kick him out of bed!

Posted by Anna | December 2, 2007 8:19 PM

Whoever said that he was?

Posted by NapoleonXIV | December 2, 2007 8:23 PM

I wonder if any of these people now talking about being in bed with Steaming and Beaming Larry - wonder if the Idaho "news" rag paid them?

Not uncommon in this era. Of course they would never own up to it. The Idaho Statesman wants their horse in the race to replace Craig now, then that short termer can run as incumbent next year.

Newspapers love to play king maker.

Posted by u are happy in the snow, me 2 | December 2, 2007 9:36 PM

Anna @23, of course some older guys are hot. But I don't like to brag...

On a more serious note, Marty, I think you have missed the point of why so many of us are relishing the continuing saga of Larry Craig. It is not because we are homophobic Focus-On-The-Family bigots who enjoy the public outing of a closet case by a newspaper intent on a witch hunt. I recognize a lot of names in here and not one has ever struck me as a Bush-voting Faux-News-watching Ken Hutcherson Prayer Warrior.

I can only speak for myself, but the reason I am having fun following this story is not because Larry Craig is gay (whether he admits it or not). Whether his sexual partners are male or female is irrelevant. It is not even because he cheated on his wife. That was wrong, but it is none of my business and still wouldn't be even if I was A) a Republican or B)an Idaho resident. Bill Clinton cheated on his wife, but if Hillary forgave him then so should the rest of us.

No, the reason I am enjoying this melodrama is because Larry Craig belongs to a political party whose members for at least the last 30 years have been setting themselves up as morally superior to the rest of us. I can forgive an adulterer, but nobody likes a hypocrite. It's high time these holier-than-thou types finally are getting what has been a long time coming. The fact that Craig is just one of so many of these smug assholes getting caught with their pants down just makes it even better. This is like a Mark Twain story in progress.

Enjoy your night at the Cuff, Marty. Good luck with that Mormon underwear thing.

Posted by RainMan | December 2, 2007 10:06 PM

The Idaho Statesman running this story is like Michael Richards using the N-word.

If this story ran in the Stranger, it would be entertaining and poignant.

Posted by Mahtli69 | December 2, 2007 10:07 PM

@20 - "Die is a bit violent, how about simmer down a bit?"

Sure, no problem.

Marty : just shut your motherfucking mouth. Now. Please.

By the way - that's Wowza with a Z, sugar. Watch that, will you.

Posted by Wowza | December 2, 2007 10:07 PM

I love it when gays intentionally try to destroy someone else for being gay, even if they only disagree with their political ideas.

You disgust me...

Posted by ecce homo | December 2, 2007 10:48 PM

Ecce - they wouldn't make nearly as much if they did.

By the way - the PI's now saying eight mean instead of four...

Posted by Ziggity | December 2, 2007 10:53 PM

@11.... I'm a twink now? Shit, I don't think I was ever a twink. I'm way too fat and hairy for that. Then again, I never wanted to be a twink...

Then again, I'll enjoy watching and helping republican blowhard hypocrits get popped for their shit into my grave. It's the sport of it Marty. I just gotta have it.

As for the Mike Jones' etc of the world... hey, they do what they do. And usually at least they're honest about it, even for pay. More than the Haggards, Craigs and other morally higher than thou vultures (Vitter et al included).

And ecce, like usual you don't have a thought I consider rational. At least you're consistent. The hypocrites within the "gay" community deserve to have their shit called on. If you have fucking sex (or attempt to) with someone of the same sex, and then beat down the rights of those in that same category, I want to see you called on the carpet every fucking time. I don't know if Craig falls into that category within fagdom, but I know he does when he claims he's the one being harassed. I'm enjoying the harassment of someone that's done a lot of fucking harrassing of me and my partner and my friends over the last 25+ years.

Posted by Dave Coffman | December 3, 2007 4:43 AM

I like the idaho statesman comment suggesting a "I am not gay parade". Maybe it could be a separate contingent at the gay parade.

Posted by msw | December 3, 2007 8:00 AM

The most interesting detail in the first audio clip is his description of the byproduct of his and Craig's activity...elsewhere named "santorum". Apparently Craig's attitude towards the man changed as soon as the act was over and RATHER THAN LET HIM GO TO THE RESTROOM TO CLEAN UP, Craig again threatened him and asked him to leave immediately. So maybe we need another term for "Santorum" to denote that excess which is carried around in the pants because a closeted man of power insists nothing ever happened, and wants you to leave ASAP even if it did. "Craigorum"? I am anxiously awaiting linguistic innovation.
