Media Albrecht Deserved Much Worse

onRemember Chris Albrecht, the HBO executive who was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend in a parking lot? He blamed the assault on the demon alcohol; media reports focused almost exclusively on what the impact of the assault would be on Albrecht and his employers—ignoring entirely the crime and the victim herself. (As I noted, in an alternate universe, one where we cared more about domestic-violence victims than abusive cable-TV executives, the headline might be something like this: “HBO Executive Assaults Girlfriend, Girlfriend Presses Charges.” Instead, we were told that his leave comes at “an inopportune time” for the network.)
Well, The Smoking Gun has his police report, and it’s a doozy. When cops apprehended him, Albrecht had his hands around the woman’s throat and was dragging her along the ground. Albrecht’s excuse at the time?“She had pissed me off,” according to the report. He then “informed [the officer] that he was the CEO of HBO.” Hmmm, wonder why he considered that relevant information? The woman had red marks on her neck, but refused medical attention.
And the flood of stories about what a jerk Albrecht is and how he deserves to be fired and dragged into court in three, two… Oh, wait. Right. There won’t be one.
UPDATE: Albrecht’s penalty? A $1,000 fine. And—of course the story was in the arts section. Beautiful.
Oh my God you have discovered the secret: the media machine hates women! Call an emergency meeting of the He-Man Woman-Hater's Cabal! Barnett must be eliminated!
From the AP:
"His resignation followed a report in the Los Angeles Times that HBO paid a settlement in 1991 of at least $400,000 to a subordinate and former lover who accused Albrecht of shoving and choking her."
hank: you don't think if he choked and dragged his white VP or a black man or a gay man he'd be slammed in the media and get a lot worse than a $1000 fine? it's his wife so the media ignores it.
The real question is Erica.
Did he pay his fine or is he a deadbeat like you?
Pay your tickets...
Or could it be the whole incident was blown out of proportion? From today's NY Daily News:
The girlfriend of ousted HBO chairman Chris Albrecht is standing by her man. Vegas cops busted Albrecht last Sunday after two officers said they saw him assault fetching TV reporter Karla Jensen outside the MGM Grand. But Jensen doesn't want to press charges.
"They were out with friends, there was too much drinking by everyone," Jensen's attorney, Edward Hayes, wrote District Attorney David Roger yesterday. "Mr. Albrecht was wrong, but it was not Ms. Jensen's finest hour either. Ms. Jensen loves him and forgives him. She was not hurt; there were no bruises.
If people were not able to forgive and forget unfortunate incidents in bars, no relationship would ever last and Las Vegas would be desert." Jensen, whose mother is a former LAPD officer, adds, "Chris was just as good for HBO as he was for me. But I'm smart enough to keep him."
Why the fuck won't these idiotic women press charges? That question is for you, Erica. I want to hear what your explanation is for why these women (and women like them) allow themselves to be assaulted.
I'll keep checking back to see if you answer.
@ 6, don't be an obvious idiot.
When women do press charges, often they receive little to no protection from their abusers and end up dead.
That is a pathetic excuse, 7. You're saying that women are left defenseless and that there is no justice for them.
Wrong! There are huge options for women to seek protection from the authorities - they just have to ask for it. You have been brainwashed into believing that nothing can stop the big, bad man from hurting the poor, defenseless little girls.
BullSh*t! I think allowing men to hurt women only causes more abuse in the future. If these idiots would stand up and refuse to be treated that way, then domestic violence would drop dramatically.
Or is Tom Lykis correct and women like being treated like toilet paper?
