Bewigged Gyllenhaal

posted by on January 15 at 9:47 AM

In case you missed it, host Jake Gyllenhaal kicked off this week’s Saturday Night Live with a passionate rendition of the Dreamgirls smash, “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.” Yes, it was shameless pandering to the gays, and yes, it was some well-timed promotion for Dreamgirls, but more than anything, it was a perfect example of how to host SNL.

Clearly, the first question that should be put to any SNL guest host is: What can you do that’s hilarious? In the case of Jake G., the answer clearly involved his unexpected ability to sing in his upper range and hit yelly high notes with a minimum of effort, and glory be! SNL had a legitmately funny opening skita rarity, given that most show openers involve some uncomfortable celebrity reading lame, self-referential jokes off a cue card.

Congrats to SNL and Mr. Gyllenhaal, and advice to readers: If you’re interested in that clip, watch it now, as it will likely be yanked from YouTube before long.

Yow! Look at those arms!

This had me crying I was laughing so hard - I lost it when the backup singers showed up.

Yes he's adorable but I couldn't get through the whole clip. I got bored.

Thanks for the shout out. I fully agree, that was so fun and actually funny. Plus, I never knew what a ham that guy is. Fun!

I just saw this vid over on PerezHilton and it reminded me that I hadn't read Slog yet today. :-)

Jake's hilarious, and good god he's got guns!!!

By far the best opening monologue by a guest host in several seasons. They coulda done without the cowboys, but JG was smokin!
