Stacey Levine & Friends

Why: Last year's Stranger Literature Genius, Stacey Levine, suffers from a curse: Due to publisher mismanagement, many of her books have fallen out of print. Tonight, friends of Levine, including poet Rebecca Hoogs and cellist Lori Goldston, will help celebrate the rerelease of what could be Levine's greatest achievement so far—her 2005 novel Frances Johnson—and hopefully break the curse forever. Johnson is a fine introduction to Levine's cockeyed narratives: A Florida town prepares for an upcoming big dance party while an angry nearby volcano named Sharla is belching lava, growing increasingly angry as the big day approaches.
