Dominic Holden's Op-Ed in Tomorrow's New York Times

Posted by on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 5:24 PM

Dominic Holden's feature about the marijuana-legalization ballot measure Initiative 502 was so persuasive and so well reported that the New York Times invited him to explain the issue in Washington State to a national audience.

Here's Dom's piece as it will appear in tomorrow's NYT. The gist:

Washington State has a chance this fall to siphon profits from cartels while stopping senseless arrests, or it can let the status quo prevail. It’s a simple choice, particularly given that concerns from the medical marijuana industry are, at best, red herrings.

(Pssst—skip right past the NYT's dorky headline and just focus your gaze on that beautiful illustration.)

@1: I'm freaked out by this snake-like illustrated snake with perceptible flaws. Uncanny snake valley! UNCANNY SNAKE VALLEY!

Holy shit, congratulations! Now quick, make 'em change "former federal attorney" to "former U.S. Attorney". Way more impressive to those who know what it means, which is to say, lots of NYT subscribers.

I'm impressed (again) with Dominic's work, and also impressed that the NYT is keeping their eye on scrappy alt-weeklies as a way of remaining in touch and relevant.

The slog has introduced me to a lot of people, Dom being one of many. I love this little local group of misfits, and I never thought that I would be the type of person to be acquainted with someone who would be writing an article in the NYT.

Congrats Dom, hard work pays off.

That being said, I WANT THESE MUTHAFUCKING SNAKES OFF MY MUTHAFUCKING D!

Looks like "your man" has a spine of stone...as always...

The president, in this scenario, is too afraid to touch anything that looks soft on drugs in an election year and stands weakly by.

@21: you know as well as any hippy stoner on slog that calling for legalization on a federal level prior to re-election is just handing the GOP a club to beat him with. he's cautious and strategic - a centrist. he's letting the states lead, and will jump on when the tide of history is inevitable.
