Someone has updated Google's concept video for augmented reality glasses with a little reminder of Google's core business.

Aren't those fun! Redditors began tossing up satire after satire right away. I'd like to see one for watching porn while driving home alone drunk after closing time. Someone hop to it, please!

Oh god, when he walked up to the railing at the top of the building and asked if she wanted "to see something cool" I thought for sure he was going to give her a first-person view of his leap to his death.

These are hilarious, and should prove very useful (to everyone) in the end now that they've become so viral. These spoofs will (1) keep Google on it's toes when they eventually release the glasses, and (2) therefor make them put out a better product. The more they have to fight this public perception, the better.
And the fact that this was the _instant_ universal reaction to something so cool and promising (in terms of our tech future), it gives me some confidence that these will end up being "ad opt-in" for the norm, instead of the opposite.

Yep, pretty much exactly what you'd get.

Frankly, I don't care if it throws a few ads my way, especially if it cuts down on the cost of the service. Augmented reality glasses are something I very much want.

Right, just like they covered my Android phone in ads.
Wait, no they didn't. People like to talk about how Google's "core business" is ads, but if you actually look at, well, any of their products (save for YouTube), they have very few if any ads. Their business is selling ads to others, not to cover their own stuff in ads, especially mobile.

the video really doesn't make me want them.Nothing the actor is doing needs to be done by his glasses. He walked to the subway and saw that it was closed. He needed the glasses to confirm it? Why would you go to a "bookstore" when you could tell your glasses to order them? Especially since there won't be any. Let's face it, he asked the glasess where the music section was, not a sales-person,. Who needs brick and mortar, right? I have no problem with technology itself, just some qualms about how it is used.

You don't get ads on your phone because you're already paying the provider to use it. If they gave it to you for free, it would absolutely have ads all over it.
Same with these glasses, if people have to pay a monthly fee to use them, then I'm sure the ads will be less intrusive or even absent, but if there's no fee? They've got to get their revenue somewhere...

@12, not only that, but he's standing in a bookstore talking loudly to his tech device. Not cool.
Not that it matters. This product will eventually come to market and flop when people see how useless it is in real life.

@13 Not true, I bought my phone off contract for full price. You don't have to pay anyone a monthly fee to use an Android device, just like you're not going to get any Android device for free that's only ad-supported. It's not a business model Google has ever done for hardware, so why would they start with these glasses?

@10, 16 - They put ads next to content, not on hardware. There are ads all over your phone, and mine - in search results, in GMail, on the maps, etc.. Android is a way to deliver that content and the ads to you while you're on the go.
I'm not knocking it, really, it's a funny video and obviously an exaggeration. But their business model is not in question, and it's entirely advertising. They sell ads and place them next to the vast amount of page/video/email/map-views that they control.
