Health Insurance Reform Is Anti-Gun?

Posted by on Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 9:28 AM

The group Gun Owners of America thinks so:

The special "wellness and prevention" programs (inserted by Section 1001 of the bill as part of a new Section 2717 in the Public Health Services Act) would allow the government to offer lower premiums to employers who bribe their employees to live healthier lifestyles—and nothing within the bill would prohibit rabidly anti-gun HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius from decreeing that "no guns" is somehow healthier.

We all need to contact our Senators right away.

I mean, granted, guns are not at the top of the list of health-promoting possessions, but this worry seems excessively paranoid. The White House agrees, smartly offering its fact-check here.

nothing in the bill prevents NASA from bombing the moon, either.

For whatever it's worth, I've never even heard of "Gun Owners of America." They're obviously not the most mainstream outfit.

And besides, the bill's never gonna pass anyway, so why worry?

Health Reform is pro-gun. Its good for gun owners, by keeping them healthy so they can use their guns, by providing care to all victims of gun violence so the gun users are not responsible, and by drastically reducing the cost of gun violence. Good for people, good for gun owners, and good for gun users.

I'm pretty sure that when I bought renters' insurance, the insurance company asked whether I owned a gun, with the presumption that they'd charge me more if I did. Why isn't this fake organization squawking about that?

Gun Owners of America is a group that considers the NRA too soft. I support the right to gun ownership, but they seem pretty crazy and this is just "leotarded" to use the parlance of our time.

I'm far more worried about the nude cameras at Sea-Tac and how they continue to waste our time and money on their paranoia, while continuing to be ineffective in stopping actual terrorist methods ... but, hey, you freak out about guns if you want.

Honestly, I was more bothered by this bit: "Fox News is reporting today that the word 'tax' appears 183 times in the health care bill." It's so bogglingly depressing that there are people who would actually consider the number of times a word appears in a bill to be indicative of ANYTHING about the bill's actual content, and that Fox is able to successfully pander to these people by "reporting" this blatantly meaningless information as evidence of something. I mean, how DID Obama get elected in a country with so much utterly stupid shit?

NEXT UP ON FOX NEWS: "THE WORD 'THE' APPEARS 1,982 TIMES IN NEW HEALTH CARE BILL - EXPERTS SUGGEST THIS INDICATES FURTHER MOVEMENT TOWARDS SOCIALISM AND GUN BANS BY OBAMA ADMIN"

The new argument against health care reform is that unless it EXPLICITLY says its against something, it's for it. As in...

Health Care bill is anti-puppy because there's nothing in the bill that would keep Kathleen Sebelius from declaring that puppies are "un-healthy."

The fact that this line of argument works on anyone in this country is the worst indictment of our system of education yet.
