MONDAY, FEB 2: SPRAWL
7:30 pm at 12th Avenue Arts
Is it jinxy that the first theater production to open in the new 12th Avenue Arts building is about new real estate and disaster? Sprawl, a world premiere by Joshua Conkel (MilkMilkLemonade), is a loose, campy comedy that begins with vapid real-estate agents and ends with an insectoid invasion. Along the way, you get an inconvenient pregnancy, an addled pill-crusher-and-sniffer, a troubled gay couple called “the Williams,” and a monstrously self-important mayor’s wife (who everybody pretends to like) played by Waxie Moon. Sprawl’s main pleasures are the characters’ sharp little one-liners that prick and deflate each other’s egos.

Here are tons more things to distract you from sadness today.

TUESDAY, FEB 3: COMEDY WOMB
7:30 pm at Rendezvous
The rules of this pro-lady stand-up night are refreshing in their simplicity: no misogyny and no heckling. Based on the size, quality, and diversity of the crowds it attracts, the rules work. Every Tuesday night, fans pack the Rendezvous Grotto to watch two and a half hours of comedy, about half of which is delivered by women. Having so many women onstage and in the crowd makes male comics more mindful of their sets and their audience, while reinforcing what should be obvious: Women can be just as funny (or unfunny) as men. Equality, hurrah!

WEDNESDAY, FEB 4: CrampsMass!
8:30 pm at Re-bar
The full name of this night is CrampsMass! A Celebration of Life and Death. As any music nerd worth his/her salt knows, iconic band the Cramps lost their lead singer, Lux Interior, in 2009. This event, like a psychobilly-themed midnight mass in honor of Lux Interior (and still-alive bandmate/wife Poison Ivy), promises to be ALL THINGS CRAMPS, with performances by drag stars Freckles Riverside, Jackie Hell, and Miss Anita Goodmann; musicians Ade, Kate Moore, and Jess Wamre; and dancers/ass-shakers Miss Elaine Yes and Ivy St. Spectre. There’s a prize for best Cramps costume, and probably a real gothy-awesome birthday cake for a pretty lady named Crystal Jewell.

THURSDAY, FEB 5: FOX AND THE LAW
9 pm at Sunset Tavern
If you’re interested in an actual night of actual rock ’n’ roll/wintertime face-singeing music, Fox and the Law have got your number, and also the numbers of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and a really good pot dealer. Singer Guy Keltner’s voice is more spirited than your average stoner-rock lead, a nice balance for the heavy ’70s riffage. This is the release party for their new album, Live from the Banana Stand. Do get there on time for Sashay’s fast/dirty/fabulous queercore, the raw punk of SSDD (Sick Seals Do Dayquil?), and the hopefully brutal Wolfgang Fuck.

FRIDAY, FEB 6: ROLADEX SCORE 'ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK'
7 pm at SIFF Cinema Uptown
Seattle-via-Texas duo Roladex haven’t been here long, but they’ve landed one of the most prestigious gigs an electronic-oriented artist can get: scoring John Carpenter’s 1981 classic sci-fi thriller film Escape from New York. Carpenter’s original score is abristle with brilliant and subtle ominous undertones, executed on analog synths and piano. Roladex’s advanced aptitude for said synthesizers and the band’s immersion in early-’80s dystopian electronic music should result in an interesting interpretation. Showing as part of the EMP Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival.
