Could Pot Growers Use a Little Less Energy? "Marijuana growing operations can be major power hogs," reports KUOW. "Now that they're legal in Oregon and Washington, experts are looking for ways to make them more energy efficient. Indoor pot growing operations use as much electricity per square foot as data centers, according to energy attorney Richard Lorenz with Cable Huston. 'Just growing four marijuana plants uses as much energy as running 29 refrigerators,' he said. 'The carbon output is incredible.'" The problem: "Growers don't want to sacrifice the quality of their product to save energy."

The Latest on the SPD Officer Who Arrested an Elderly Black Man for No Apparent Reason: Ansel broke the story yesterday morning. Then he asked whether the same officer had also ranted about "chronic black racism" on Facebook. The local NAACP demanded action. Is SPOG Gonna Fact-Check a Vlogger Critic? The Seattle Police Officers Guild has suggested on Twitter that it doesn't like this video commentary from Brett Hamil. (Our headline for the video: "The Seattle Police Guild Is Curbstomping Accountability.") Will a fact-check be forthcoming?

Wolves Recovering in Oregon: "Wolves in the eastern third of Oregon have reached a key milestone in the state’s recovery program," KUOW reports. "Officials have confirmed seven breeding pairs in 2014, the third year in a row a healthy number of pups have survived. Those two indicators of a recovering wolf population trigger phase two in the state's wolf reintroduction plan."

You Can't Open-Carry Guns at Olympia Hearings Anymore: This wasn't already a rule? "At the end of the first week of the legislative session earlier this month, the Senate announced the open-carry ban in the public galleries that sit above the chamber floor, and was quickly followed by the House early last week," the AP reports. "Leaders in both chambers said they considered openly carried guns the same as any prop used for a demonstration, which is not allowed under each chamber's rules."

Apparently, America needs a new Air Force One and Boeings gonna build it.

Boeing Will Build the New Air Force One: "The Air Force," Bloomberg reports, "will let Boeing build the replacement for Air Force One without competition but allow bidding on specialized equipment for the new presidential aircraft... Boeing has been the sole provider of aircraft used by U.S. presidents since 1962."

Also, Bill Boeing's Old, Old Yacht Is Up for Sale: "The 125-foot yacht built for Bill Boeing Sr. in 1930 is up for sale in Vancouver, B.C.," reports the Seattle Times. "Owner Gordon Levett, the Canadian who’s owned it for nearly 30 years, is asking just under $2.5 million. Need a place to keep it? A 150-foot boathouse is available for another $900,000 to shelter it from the elements."

Are Biofuels a Bad Idea? "Western governments have made a wrong turn in energy policy by supporting the large-scale conversion of plants into fuel and should reconsider that strategy, according to a new report from a prominent environmental think tank," reports the New York Times. "Turning plant matter into liquid fuel or electricity is so inefficient that the approach is unlikely ever to supply a substantial fraction of global energy demand, the report found. It added that continuing to pursue this strategy—which has already led to billions of dollars of investment—is likely to use up vast tracts of fertile land that could be devoted to helping feed the world’s growing population."

Why Obama's College Savings Plan Failed: "The first rule of modern tax policy is raise taxes only on the rich," Josh Barro writes. "The second rule is that your family isn’t rich, even if you make a lot of money. President Obama’s State of the Union proposal to end the tax benefits for college savings accounts ran afoul of these rules."
