Greetings from Reykjavik, y'all. Your correspondent's here, honeymooning happily and (bonus) checking out the absolutely massive Airwaves music festival. It's a sprawling affair, spread across something like ten official venues and a ton of unofficial spots, one of which is where we happened across Icelandic electro-funk hero Hermigervill (a tip of the hat to Dave Segal for the recommendation). Now, is an upscale men's suit store at four in the afternoon the ideal space/time to witness his squirmy, squelchy techno pop? Perhaps not. I'm thinking a loft rave at two in the morning would be more appropriate. But that didn't stop the hippie-haired wild man from firing off an impressively high-energy half hour of Theremin-assisted insanity, straddling the line between disco, hiphop, and some sort of ska/dubstep hybrid that ended the show in batshit fashion. "Harlem Reykjavik" started things off in style, its loping strut getting beanies bumping and setting the tone for the freewheeling set that followed. I hereby give Hermigervill the unofficial and non-binding title of funkiest Icelander.
