30 years ago this month, Creation Records released “Upside Down,” the debut single by Scotland's moodiest bastards, the Jesus and Mary Chain. It remains one of noise pop's peaks, a three-minute earworm/adrenaline-bomb speedball of a song. As far as catchy, screaming-feedback-intensive teenage angst and alienation goes, “Upside Down” is unbeatable. Happy fucking birthday to it.
