When I saw this story today...

Gia Arnold, a 24-year-old Republican candidate for state Senate from the Niagara Falls area, abruptly halted her campaign early Wednesday because of an extramarital affair she began just days ago. Arnold, who has three children between the ages of 2 and 5, announced her decision to suspend her candidacy, and revealed the affair, in an email to supporters and reporters just after midnight, saying she made “personal decisions” that caused her to step back from the race. “I had an affair on August 1st and four days later I left my husband,” Arnold told the Daily News in a telephone interview.... Although she is suspending her candidacy, Arnold said she was not withdrawing from the race entirely. Her name will remain on the ballot and she plans to serve if elected.

...I immediately Googled "Gia Arnold" + "gay marriage" + "issues" because when this sort of thing happens—GOP candidate cheats on spouse—it's invariably a "family values" ranter and hypocrisy is always good for a quick blog post. I just assumed Arnold would be another Vitter or a Sanford or a McAllister. But Arnold surprised me:

Gia believes in a small, limited government, which allows all people to live freely. She believes that all New Yorkers are equal under the guaranteed equal rights under Constitution, and should be able to do as they please so long as they are not causing injustice towards another.... She supports gay marriage, as well as marijuana legalization and decriminalization.

O brave new world that has such Republicans in it!
