Tonight in Music: Northwest Psych Fest Rolls On, Plus Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

NORTHWEST PSYCH FEST DAY TWO

(Sunset) With Northwest Psych Fest and Hypnotikon*, Seattle has two major events exclusively devoted to psychedelic music. The former obviously is more regionally focused, and it reflects the outstanding health of the scene up here. Tonight sees a gathering of explosive veteran rockers Kinski, trance-inducing mystical thugs This Blinding Light, (other)worldly musical chameleons Master Musicians of Bukkake, espionage-surf-jazz dynamos Diminished Men, sweetly melodic Portland traditionalists Rick Bain & the Genius Position, and psych-music savant and vinyl enthusiast DJ Explorateur. DRUNKEN ARGUMENTS MAY INDEED ERUPT OVER THE INDIE ROCK OF CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH

(Crocodile) I’m just like you. I was in Williamsburg in the spring of 2006, and just like you, all I listened to were two albums: Interpol’s Antics and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The lead singer of the former band, Paul Banks, reminds me of Ian Curtis, and the lead singer of the latter, Alec Ounsworth, reminds me of David Byrne. And just like you, I had a long and drunk argument in a dingy bar on Metropolitan Avenue about how Ounsworth had much more talent than Banks. One could hear in the voice of Ounsworth a lot that was original, a lot that was his own. You could never really confuse him for Byrne. Nothing in Banks’s voice, on the other hand, was Banks’s. His voice was haunted by the ghosts of the post-punk dead. And just like you, I felt this argument went on for too long, and I wanted to return to Seattle. CHARLES MUDEDE
