Lion Bites Off Woman's Finger in Classic "She Said/Zoo Said" Story

Posted by on Thu, Jul 31, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Consumerist brings this story from the wild lands of Michigan.

She said:

She tells that a zookeeper allowed her into the cage with the big cat over the weekend, and that the guide told her “yeah,” when she asked if she could pet it. But as she tried to pet it, she claims the lion ripped off part of her finger.

The zoo said:

“The lady went into the security area and was told by the guide to get back and the lady stated she wanted to touch the lion and continued, against the guide’s warning, to put her finger inside the fence and the lion nipped the end of her finger,” the owners said in an email to WNEM, adding that the zoo has posted warning signs and bite signs everywhere.

Even the amount of damage is different, with the zoo going for the much cuter "nipped." The most honest version of this story, of course, is the lion's: Saw food. Missed.

"...a zookeeper allowed her into the cage," right. I assume she's suing too. Only a shame she didn't try to lean in for a kiss instead.

Dear humans,

A lion is not a house cat. Do not pet it.

No way they let her in there, much less let her try to pet the thing.

There is never a time when a big cat is wrong to attack a human. Not a jackass sticking her fingers through a zoo cage, not a suburbanite trying to claim more land for a new suburb, not a cattle farmer in south Asia.

Haha I love the end of this post, "Saw food. Missed." Well said.

I assume the "yeah" was in the sense of "yeah, that would be a really brilliant move, Einstein, now get the fuck out of there before that apex predator over there fucks you up".

I spent 15 minutes hanging out with the Woodland Park Zoo's jaguar keeper while I worked for the zoo store one summer. And after he so proudly showed me the wiffle ball that Gordo made out of his toy (a hollow ball made from the same material as plastic cutting boards), all I can say is that this woman had to be a blithering idiot. She should be happy she didn't lose at least a whole hand.

Petting a housecat uninvited could get you nipped, clawed and damaged too.

After hours of licking and styling to get every hair just right, the last thing any cat wants is some stranger touching them, messing the fur and leaving that awful human smell on them.

I used to work for the zoo. At training we were told to be VIGILANT, as there actually exists some thrill seekers who always go to zoos try to get inside the enclosures with kodiacs, lions, tigers, polar bears, crocodiles etc. We were told to go after them and distract the animals to try to save them. I remember thinking: Yeah, suurrreee, that'll happen, we'll just jump right in and offer ourselves to the nice lioness to save the Darwin rejects.
