Who Should Win: Jayapal, Martin, Secrest, Burfect, Stafford, or Watanabe?

SO MANY CANDIDATES! In the top row, left to right: John Stafford and Claude Burfect. In the bottom row, left to right: Rowland Martin, Louis Watanabe, Pramila Jayapal, and Sheley Secrest.

The Stranger Election Control Board picked Pramila Jayapal in the bursting-at-the-seams 37th District State Senate race:

This race is more crowded than the Tampax aisle during a supermoon (we don't know what that means either), but only one candidate deserves a seat in the state senate: Pramila Jayapal.

But, who do you pick?

Sometimes, kissing asses is useful. So is moderation. Just ask people who refuse to compromise and get nothing- or worse.

Good job getting in the Tampax bit for a race where you endorse a chick!

Why he's no one voted for Burfect?!!! His name rhymes with perfect, which is totes a reason to elect him to student counsel.

Are you trying to determine whether or not you should continue campaigning for Primila? Primila is too much of a suck-up. You will live to regret this endorsement.

@5, her name is Pramila, not Primila.

I don't know if she's a "suck-up" or not, having left junior high quite a few decades ago, but Jayapal is the clear choice here. From the Muni League to the 37th District Dems, her endorsement list is stellar -- Patty Murray, Adam Kline, Dow Constantine, Ed Murray, Larry Gossett, Young Democrats, Cascade Bicycle Club, Progressive Majority, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, etc. etc.

This is exactly the kind of thing we need to move forward: a smart progressive who knows how to build coalitions to defeat Republicans statewide and make progressive action happen.

Anyone but the woman from #WallStreet. Interesting that The Stranger picked the corporate pick. How very #CriminalBanker of you.

Pramila has endorsements only because of her husbands connections with unions. But she really has no track record for getting anything done.
While she is a show horse, Louis Watanabe is a work horse.
He was part of founding a small but influential business that sold to Microsoft, taught business for years and has been hands on in union organizing and in his district, for years.
Pramila has indicated she is using the district seat as a stepping stone for bigger things.
Louis Watanabe is genuinely concerned about making life better for his district and all his neighbors.
He is clearly the person with the smarts and credentials to bring real change.

I agree with the last comment, and LOVE that phrase: Pramila is a show horse while Professor Louis Watanabe is a WORK HORSE!!
Very clever and very accurate!
I heard through the grapevine that Pramila too, got the endorsements because of her husbands connections and that her thug supporters have been pulling up opponents signs and copying their literature nearly word for word, even claiming she has the credentials when she doesnt!

Professor Louis Watanabe seems to have the best track record as far as working tirelessly for his community. After reading online what I could about them, he seems better suited for the job with his vast experience in education and job creation, as well as his many years of teaching business. And jobs is what district 37 needs, most of all.

And he seems to have the support among the real people on the ground, not outside groups who have done little to nothing for his neighborhood.
Professor Watanabe seems like the best choice after doing real research into everyone's past experiences and actions….just saying'.

Great to see many candidates in this race. It's unfortunate when a race, like so many judicial positions, has only one candidate, often the incumbent. I'd agree with your pick, though, as Pramila Jayapal has proven for years she's a passionate, competent, inspirational, effective leader who can take representation of the 37th to an entirely new level. Case in point, her campaign has been far more active and engaging than anything I've seen in a state legislative race - from early on. As a Columbia City resident, she's got my vote. Hope the other candidates consider running for office again.
