  • IF YOU AREN'T REGISTERED, YOU CAN'T PICK from among the six candidates running for state senate in Seattle's 37th District. In the top row, from left to right: Democrats John Stafford and Claude Burfect. In the bottom row, left to right: Republican Rowland Martin and Democrats Louis Watanabe, Pramila Jayapal, and Sheley Secrest.

Will you be 18 or older by the time the August 5 primary rolls around? Do you meet all the other basic criteria for voting in this state (US citizen, Washington resident, not a felon who's lost voting rights)? Then you need to know this:

Monday, July 7, is the deadline for online and mail-in registrations, and voter registration updates.

Here's how to register. DO IT NOW! Among other things, votes cast in the August primary will determine the future of park funding in Seattle.

Not compelling enough? Try this: They'll also shape races that will end up determining whether Democrats are able to take back control of the state senate this fall. That outcome, in turn, will have huge ramifications for everything from education funding to tax reform and reproductive rights. Oh, and votes in this primary will also tell us whether Seattle is itching to elect a second Socialist (this one to potentially replace Democratic House Speaker Frank Chopp) and whether Seattle thinks running in Google Glass is a good look. All very important!

In other PSAs: Whether you need to register online today or not, know that the Stranger Election Control Board is hard at work examining the candidates and that our endorsements for the August primary come out July 16.
