God Punishes Spanish Team With Lightning Strike After Their Disappointing World Cup Display

Posted by on Tue, Jun 24, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Today in World Cup hijinks: Former champions Spain, who were unceremoniously dumped out of the World Cup after two dismal losses, landed back home in Madrid today, where their plane was "hit by a bolt of lightning."

No one was hurt.

But Italy's Giorgio Chiellini was hurt when Uruguayan star Luis Suarez bit him in the middle of today's match (he's done that before).

And have you seen the facial expression that Miguel Herrera, the Mexican team's coach, keeps making during frenzied goal celebrations? Here it is:

I keep hearing people lament the way the US team lost its lead against Portugal at the last second in Sunday's game (they tend to sigh heavily and make a sad face). But to all of those people: you're taking this way too seriously. Soccer is a haven for buffoons who happen to be ridiculously talented (e.g. Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo). Watch them play the beautiful game and do their thing but don't get overly invested in it. Perhaps I'll sign off my next match live-blog—Thursday at 9 a.m. for USA vs. Germany—with: Hate FIFA, love the game, enjoy the madness.

Now all we need is a good strong headbutt to round things out.

you're taking this way too seriously

Giving yourself over to drama, joy, and heartbreak of this sport is fun.

Obviously it's not the end of the world or anything but getting invested in it makes it that much more exciting.

If you are not invested in it, you are missing most of the joy of sports.

The terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles, and whatnot. Looking at it the way an uptight art critic looks at a painting is missing the entire point.

Yeah, and that superbowl win? Big whoops. Don't take it so seriously. The NFL is a haven for buffoons who happen to be ridiculously talented.

MLB is a haven for buffoons who happen to be ridiculously talented. The NBA is a haven for buffoons who happen to be ridiculously talented. The NHL is a haven for buffoons who happen to be ridiculously talented. MLS is a haven for buffoons who happen to be ridiculously talented. We shouldn't sigh or express our emotions with our faces? Are you that dispassionate with your own interests?

What everyone else has already said. One can be deeply, heavily and emotionally invested and simply not be an asshole. Plenty of us are.

@7 Don't conflate love of sport with love of a team because they are often mutually exclusive as shown when team fans justify the most unsporting behavior. The emotional roller coaster of fandom misses the point of sport to focus on the us versus them mentality.

Ansel, you suck at writing, don't take it too seriously though. We're just a bunch of commenting buffoons, talented at being talentless.

Please stop 'reporting' on sports. Thank you.
