This is a welcome surprise. Seattle’s Da $tepCh!ld (aka Shane Owens) has produced a dense, primordial mix centering on music from the Far West album by 2012 Stranger music Genius candidates Master Musicians of Bukkake. In it he threads passages from the Beatles’ lugubrious and ominous “Blue Jay Way” and Pink Floyd’s grandly dreary “Welcome to the Machine.” Owens keenly sussed the complementary elements in these songs and meshed them skillfully.

Asked about the motivation for this mix, he said, “I just found myself mixing these (some of my old favorites) among others into the new MMOB LP. I put it out there [on YouTube] for people so they may enjoy it or hate it. I figure if I like it someone else might as well.”

Is Owens leery about legal repercussions for using songs by such well-known bands? Not really. “I am a small farmer doing this in my spare time, not for the cash. I would hope these bands would see that I obviously like and respect their work if I spend my own free time with them. I would say that I mix in what I think they may have been inspired by, and what they inspire in me. MMOB—one damn wonderful band!”
