The Biggest Elephant in the World Killed for His Tusks

Posted by on Mon, Jun 16, 2014 at 2:53 PM

IBT reports:

Satao, the world's biggest elephant, has been killed by poachers with a poison-tipped arrow in Kenya sending shockwaves among the wildlife community.

The elephant was killed for its long tusks as the poachers had chopped off its entire face after killing it.

Satao was one of the last few great elephants whose tusks reach up to the ground, and was seen as having the potential to breed bull elephants of its kind.

The reason why this great elephant is now dead can entirely be found in the global economic system that humans have accepted as TINA ("there is no alternative"). And not just because there is a market for elephant tusks, but, more importantly, the park is simply understaffed. This is the kind of shit you get with austerity.

My sadness at this news can only be tempered by my hopes that the reason this noble elephant was destroyed will be the same reason humans will become extinct and the world will be left to heal.

What we need is proper controls and a registry for poison tipped arrows. It's simply crazy that Kenyans can arm themselves with weapons that can take down an elephant, literally, without having their mental status checked and with no oversight by the government.

Kill all the poachers.

This has nothing to do with the economy; it has to do with human cruelty toward animals.

@8: no, it has to do with economic desperation. and the bad taste of certain nationalities who still purchase ivory on the black market.

All poachers should be put to death. Slowly.

Allow people to raise elephants for ivory, cut off the tusks without killing the elephants. Problem solved. Same for Rhinos.
