SAGE FRANCIS' BRAIN-TWISTING, HEART-ON-SLEEVE RAPS

(Neumos) Perhaps best remembered for his blistering track “Makeshift Patriot,” released one month after the September 11 attacks, Sage Francis is the embodiment of righteously indignant indie rap, with all the lyrical baggage that that implies. The difference between Sage and, let’s say Sole, is that he can flow like a mofo: he won the inaugural Scribble Jam MC battle, and his spoken-word background shows through in his dense, assonant, and allusive wordplay, all complex internal rhymes and hard-as-fuck consonants. Album-wise, he’s had a spotty track record since career-making debut Personal Journals, but there’s no doubt he can still bring the fire and brimstone to any stage that’ll have him. Plus, what other rapper can claim to have collaborated with everyone’s favorite weird uncle, Will Oldham? Sage Francis contains multitudes. With Sleep and B. Dolan. KYLE FLECK

SSION AND AND THE "FLY AS SHIT" DOUBLE DUCHESS: A HYPERCOLOR BANANA SPLIT

(Chop Suey) This show is going to be a queertastic hypercolor banana split of much wow! The very blurb you’re reading right now should have been turned in days ago, but I cannot stop watching SSION videos. They’re insane. SSION are an art/music group fronted by a mustached freaky genius named Cody Critcheloe. The songs are amusing and sultry electro-pop sung in Critcheloe’s airy voice, with enough avant-vamp/camp visuals to make Divine herself cry leopard-print tears of joy. Oh, and definitely check out their cover of Young Marble Giants’ “Credit in the Straight World.” Also on the bill tonight: the “fly as shit” Bay Area club duo Double Duchess, plus Seattle’s most captivating electro-witches Glitterbang.
