John Oliver Destroys FIFA

Posted by on Tue, Jun 10, 2014 at 3:34 PM

On top of all the horribleness recounted by Oliver (there's a 2 Girls 1 Cup comparison in there), today FIFA head Sepp Blatter—the dude whose job it is to organize the World Cup—cynically attempted to cast critics of the organization's history of bribery and sleazeball corruption as racists.

The amazing thing about Qatar isn't that they bribed their way in, it's that they did so for FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. That's less than countries spend on their legitimate bids! Brazil is paying ELEVEN BILLION DOLLARS to put on the Cup -- five mil is a drop in the bucket, it's probably less than what they're spending on canapes for the FIFA dignitaries ("another ortolan, monseigneur? The foie gras will be out in a minute. Would you prefer the 1951 Lafite or the 1978 Romanee-Conti?")

I guarantee other countries are shocked that the price is so low. The payments for 2026 are going to be much, much higher.

Where that criminal organization, FIFA is concerned, the longtime writing and articles of Andrew Jennings are most important:

I watch MLS. I have little patience for international soccer because, corruption aside, THEY FLOP WAY THE FUCK TOO MUCH. It takes Yanks and Aussies to get a sport right it seems.

Meh, you always have to consider the source when it comes to FIFA. The Brits can't stand that an ex-German player was put in charge. It's just typical English nationalism at play here. Pretty cruel that he mocks the old man when he falls, yet expects us all to believe that his criticisms are motivated by concern for people. Nice try...
