Is Donald Sterling Planning to Sue the NBA for One Billion Dollars?

Posted by on Fri, May 30, 2014 at 2:31 PM

That's what NBC's Tim Stelloh says:

Embattled Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is planning to sue the league after he was forced to relinquish control of the team, NBC News has learned.

A source close to Sterling says that he will file a lawsuit this afternoon seeking damages in excess of $1 billion.

People sure are tossing the billions around this week, aren't they?

He's going to have a tough time proving damages after accepting his share of the $2B windfall. Also, PLEASE put him on the stand.

Why sue when he could just take over the Swallow Valley Mall and Pizza Court?

What a colossal prick.

You know he cheats on his taxes too? He's a slumlord, and some of his properties are still being paid in the name of his grandmother who died fifty years ago. Hopefully he will join her any minute now.

And how, exactly, are lawyers supposed to depose Mr. Sterling, who has been recently deemed "mentally incapacitated" by those in charge of the Trust that owns the team?

Sterling's career and fortune have been built on using the legal system to bully those without the means for effective counsel. The NBA is moving past the consigliere style of legal action (Stern), so they'll actually have a genuine legal team making a factual based argument that "It's their game, and they decide who plays". (Which is what every lawyer who has seen the NBA constitution has said.)
