In Rare Public Stoning, Pregnant Woman Killed in Pakistan

Posted by on Tue, May 27, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Her name was Farzana Parveen and she was 25 years old. The Associated Press reports:

A pregnant woman was stoned to death Tuesday by her own family outside a courthouse in the Pakistani city of Lahore for marrying the man she loved.

The woman was killed while on her way to court to contest an abduction case her family had filed against her husband. Her father was promptly arrested on murder charges, police investigator Rana Mujahid said, adding that police were working to apprehend all those who participated in this "heinous crime.

Closer to home, there's the same vein of misogyny in incidents like these, when women refuse sexual advances and are violently retaliated against, and in the death of Alyssa Funke.

Rape culture is pervasive and persistent. "Reading magazines such as Maxim and Men’s Health is associated with lower intentions to seek sexual consent," a study released today by researchers at Washington State University finds, "and lower intentions to adhere to decisions about sexual consent."

Because Men's Health and Pakistani Islamic fundamentalism have so much in common. Why, they're practically the same thing!

Half the comment replies for the sexy photos in the Maxim and Playboy feeds on Facebook are by women.

Now that's what you call war on women.

@3 that's such a tired red herring. I don't think all women have to object to have a dialogue on the healthiness of US porn state.

On the other hand, I'd agree with @1 that equating a stoning in Pakistan is not going to forward the dialogue, and it's time for a serious discussion on how women are being objectified.

@1 "Islamic fundamentalism "

Islam doesn't condone or endorse honor killings. It's cultural, not religious.

Not to question your reading comprehension, or lack thereof, but perhaps your invective is best directed further upstream in the thread.

I guess this is the closest we're going to get to a post on misogyny today, eh, regardless of the fact that every other publication is covering it? Twenty posts about Macklemore's Jew nose and yet complete silence on the cultural misogyny that lead to actual mass murder? A few limp links to other publications because you're all too fucking wussy to say anything real about this issue because you know it'll make the misogyny-denying assholes who read your blog angry? I'm sorry, but what the fuck kind of so-called progressive paper is this? Are you so post-feminist that you don't even bother to discuss women's issues anymore?

But, hey, I guess I'm impressed that at least liberal dudes might be coming closer to admitting media objectification of women might be an actual thing that's a problem regardless of whether they participate in it. Woo fucking hoo.

@6 It may or may not be cultural. However, those who do the killings often claim they do it in the name of Islam, and others in that culture don't seem to object to that characterization. So it is functionally religious, wouldn't you say?

So... a woman was killed by her own family, and your reaction to coverage is this rant?

Oh, I see what the problem is. You've arrived at a gun-control forum by mistake. Feministing is just down the internet on the left.

Sorry, but I don't think your "How dare you question my - look, SQUIRREL!" defense is going cut it on this one.

So, apparently, the five or six previous posts mentioning the horrible mass murder at UCSB don't count because, NOBODY POSTED ABOUT IT TODAY! Yeah, six posts, including this one, about the horrible things misogynists do to women, but The Stranger has clearly entered into a state of "complete silence" on the subject. And your rationalization for this "fucking wussy" (isn't that a derogatory reference to a part of the female anatomy? Are you trying to convince us you're against objectification while adopting the language of the oppressor?) conspiracy is that it might "make the misogyny-denying assholes who read your blog angry?" Really? Do you ever actually READ the comments around here? If there's ONE THING the Slog editors don't seem to worry about much it's making assholes angry. You would seem to be a case-in-point, regardless of the otherwise salient points you make about objectification in general.

Just because you choose to ignore Muslims who condemn honor killings, whether explicitly or tacitly, doesn't mean Muslims don't condemn them.

I'm pretty sure that the woman's husband, now widower, is Muslim, and you know what? For him, it's not a matter of her family being full of Muslims; it's a matter of her family being dominated by assholes.

Ah the rich and diverse culture of Islam.

@6: so Islam is neutral on Honor Killings?

sorry, it owns this one, the Hijab/Burkha/Chador, and and FGM, too.

i'm going out on a limb here: Islam is fucked up about women like no other religion. sure, others are fucked up, but wow, Islam nails it.

It's getting a little difficult to determine just what is Islam and what is not, since all the terrorist groups claim that they are practicing Islam. And the only thing that's heard from American Muslims is "You can't blame Islam for those people!"

Can't blame Catholics for the IRA, Baptists (and other protestants) for the KKK, either.

Religion is a valuable and comforting thing for every culture. It is also a destructive and violent thing for every culture.

Rape culture is a fantasy of far left ideologues.

MRA/PUA culture and misogyny in general are real problems on the far right.

Anyone who believes in either of these ideologies is an extremist.

#11, Huh? "Wussy" means gutless person. There's no origin relating it to pussy as far as I know. But forgive me if it is. I had no idea and was not picturing a girl or vagina when I used it.

However, all of the posts about the murders have focused solely on gun control or have merely linked without comment to other articles. I haven't seen a single opinion piece by anyone on staff about the rampant internet misogynistic spewing of guys like Rodgers that has lead up to these actions despite the fact that every other paper is talking about it. And you do see this type of misogyny on the Stranger's boards every single time an article about a women's issue is discussed. Maybe you need to read this article if you don't recognize it:…

And you know that if a mass murder had happened to someone with a racist or homophobic manifesto (and yes, I know this guy expressed elements of both but that wasn't the gist of it), every single writer here would be opining on it. It is striking to me that they have remained for the most part mute about this particular issue.

You say "despite the fact that every other paper is talking about it." It seems like you have your answer right there. Your complaint here is that the Stranger hasn't jumped on the same bandwagon absolutely everyone else is on? Does every news outlet have to run the same stories in the same way at the same time?
