More on UW study on doomed polar ice: Paul posted about this yesterday, and now here's more on the University of Washington study. Here's one quote from Ian Joughin, UW Applied Physics Laboratory glaciologist and lead author:

“Whether we turn the dial up or down, that part of the ice sheet goes away. It’s too late. But the longer it gets drawn out, the more time people will have to move inland.”

Above, you see the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, which the UW scientists have been studying. And here is the fascinating blog about the day-to-day operations of the project. These people are fighting the good fight—thank you, scientists. THANK YOU. (And sorry about people.)

Donald Sterling needs to SHUT THE HELL UP: Eli posted about this earlier; I would say to Magic Johnson's tweet, with all due respect, however, that while we'd ALL rather be talking about the playoffs, we need to keep talking about this idiot as long as he keeps talking idiocy. Meanwhile, Shelly Sterling vows to keep her stake in the Clippers, saying, “If somebody kills somebody, does the wife have to stand trial too?”

LA to be Hell on Earth today: With record-breaking heat and extremely high danger of fire to go along with Donald Sterling.

horsesass.org calls out the Seattle Times on some serious Obamacare B.S.: As Dan posted earlier.

In Eastern Ukraine: Chaos and fear, including "an unidentified group of armed men in mismatched camouflage," violence, gunfire, deaths.

US planes search for kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls: We're "providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support," along with Britain, France, and China.

As both Cannes and SIFF get under way: What's the state of things for women directors? At Cannes this year—the festival's 67th—not so hot: There are a grand total of two women directors in the main competition. Seriously?! Cannes starts tomorrow, SIFF on Thursday.

Do you hate what comes up when you Google yourself?: Move to Europe, where the courts have decreed that "Google must delete 'inadequate, irrelevant, or no longer relevant' data from its results when a member of the public requests it."

Hope is the thing with feathers: This headline has "Hope" right in it, and the story has to do with our friends the birds.
