(Jazz Alley) If you like funk fused with jazz and bolstered by exotic percussion, you need to check out the Headhunters gig tonight (or Wednesday). In the ’70s, funk’s peak, the Headhunters were among the planet’s funkiest mamajammas. They backed Herbie Hancock on the massively popular and groovy Head Hunters and partially on Thrust and Man-Child, before breaking off from their leader for solo joints that made hiphop producers salivate: 1975’s all-time classic sample goldmine, Survival of the Fittest, and 1977’s Straight from the Gate. For the coiled lubricity of “If You’ve Got It, You’ll Get It” alone, the Headhunters should all be maxing and relaxing in the biggest mansions for the rest of their in-the-pocket lives. But some members from those halcyon days—percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark—keep soldiering on, along with bassist Chris Severin, keyboardist Stephen Gordon, and saxophonist Donald Harrison, to give another generation an idea of how ingeniously funky humans can get.
