(Crocodile) Maxïmo Park’s fifth studio album, Too Much Information, tries to go beyond that mid-’00s UK angular-guitar rock rut that many bands have fallen into and never emerged from with less driving tempos, more electronics, and way more contemplative songwriting and lyrics. Vocalist Paul Smith’s aged, emotive, melancholic verses are the focal point of the record, and there’s likely a lot of value for close listeners to find in them, but the backing instrumentation fails to deliver and makes songs fall flat on most occasions. Opening act Eternal Summers are a trio from Virginia with a hazier, more carefree lo-fi approach to their fuzzy, power-chord indie rock.
