Two weeks ago, Seattle Times reported that an Alaska Airlines flight had to turn around after it "struck a large bird." When it landed, "The remains of the bird were still attached to the nose of the aircraft." Reportedly the bird and the plane collided with such force "the bird went through the skin of the nose of the plane." It's pretty rare that anything punctures the skin of a plane.

Today we learn that the bird was an "immature bald eagle." I called Sea-Tac Airport spokesperson Perry Cooper to find out how often airplanes fly into bald eagles but haven't heard back yet. Bald eagles are not endangered like they used to be.
