STUDIO 66 CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF 60'S-SKEWED GOODNESS

(Lo-Fi) Tonight Studio 66 celebrates a decade of parties that champion discerning brands of ’60s-centric music: pop, psychedelia, soul, mod, and more. Resident DJs Chrispo, Vodka Twist, and Pelvis have asked several savvy local selectors to help them mark the auspicious occasion, as well as bands like the 66ers, the Daemon Lovers, and Powder. The Daemon Lovers are a Shocking Blue tribute group, and they nail every detail of those Dutch hitmakers’ slinky pop-sike baubles. San Francisco’s Powder, who date back to the late ’60s and were buds with Sonny & Cher, are still a tight, vital mod-rock band with loads of hooky songs that push nostalgia buttons with a minimum of corn. To keep any night going for 10 years is a major feat and Studio 66 deserves props for keeping quality control high for so long. DAVE SEGAL

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART'S HEART-TUGGING NOISE-POP

(Vera) From what seems like the very beginning of their musical life, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart have been ridiculously good at what they do, melding Stuart Murdoch–quality melodies through a Jesus and Mary Chain fuzzbox on their near-classic self-titled debut LP, sharpening the edges of their sound and songs on their Flood-produced second record, Belong, and, to underscore the spiritual-melodic connection to Belle & Sebastian, making major statements on interim EPs (see 2009's Higher Than the Stars). Touring in support of their brand-new record, Days of Abandon, the Pains light up the Vera Project with two perfectly apt supporting acts: Brighton shoegazers Fear of Men, and LA dream-poppers Ablebody (starring two members of Pains of Being Pure at Heart). THE GLITCH MOB'S BIG-BUDGET EDM

One of Los Angeles’ biggest electronic groups, the Glitch Mob leverage blockbuster beats and outrageously distorted synth bass riffs to create Burner-friendly jams. They’re on tour supporting their new album, Love Death Immortality, their first since 2010’s Drink the Sea. LDI sounds very expensive and ready to grace Hollywood thriller movie soundtracks. The Glitch Mob are very good at what they do, generating bold, un-nuanced moods with dramatic dropouts and build-ups. But an inescapable sense of hollow bombast pervades the album. Maybe that’s why this show sold out? With Ana Sia and Penthouse Penthouse. Showbox at the Market, 9 pm, SOLD OUT, all ages. DAVE SEGAL

GIVE YOUR EARS A HUG AT CATHEDRALS VIII

Your ears could use a break. You’ve been forgetting to bring your earplugs to shows, you’ve had your headphones turned up higher at work to drown out the booming and beeping construction noise happening EVERYWHERE in Seattle—I mean, when was the last time you did something nice for them? Consider tonight’s Cathedrals VIII the perfect opportunity to let your ears know you still care. Cathedrals is an extraordinary opportunity to appreciate some of the Northwest’s finest vocalists in the beautiful and “pin-drop quiet” setting of St. Mark’s Cathedral. There will be no instruments, there will be no microphones and amplifiers. It’s just you and the striking voices of very talented folks like Shenandoah Davis, Courtney Marie Andrews, Pollens, Pepper Proud, Erin Austin of OK Sweetheart, and more (including a “secret guest”—let the speculation begin). Put your phone on silent and give your ears a hug. They deserve it. MEGAN SELING
