Today's Morning News: Ukraine More Fucked Than Yesterday

Posted by on Thu, Apr 17, 2014 at 9:00 AM

Russia Totally Isn't Sending Troops Into Ukraine: President Vladmir Putin says the insurgents taking over government buildings in Eastern Ukraine—some of whom speak Russian, don't know their way around the Ukrainian cities they're in, and have identified themselves as Russian military—were not installed by Russia. “This is nonsense, there are no Russian troops in the east of Ukraine,” Putin insists. (Background for those new to all this: After the revolt in Ukraine, Russia seized the semi-autonomous state of Crimea and now Russia and its armed loyalists want lots of Eastern Ukraine to defect.) "All the people that are in the eastern Ukraine are local residents, and the main proof is that they've taken their masks off—literally. It's their home, and they have nowhere to leave to."

President Obama Responds: That is categorically bullshit:

Violent Retaliation: "Ukrainian security forces killed three pro-Russian activists, wounded 13 and took 63 captive in a firefight overnight in the eastern city of Mariupol, the interim Ukrainian interior minister said on Thursday," the NYT reports. "The clash was the most lethal so far in the east of the country." (Sadly, this sort of violence is exactly the evidence Putin was hoping for to legitimize a full-scale occupation.)

Russia Is Feeling the Pinch, Apparently: The New York Times reports today that, despite soaring polling numbers for Putin, the country is stagnating. International sanctions will soon hit, but even before that, inflation is rising and economic growth is slowing.

Text Messages: From the high-school students aboard the ferry that sunk off South Korea's southern shore. About 300 people are still missing.

Confirmed—Biden Is Running! Beau Biden. For governor.

Dan Lewis: Your evening news host on KOMO TV is pulling up his anchor and sailing along.

All Those Crazy One-Way Streets in Uptown? Some of them going two-way.

Seattle Cops Who Shoot People: Since Murray took office, there have been zero reviews into the cases to determine if the officers were justified.

"Since Murray took office, there have been zero reviews into the cases to determine if the officers were justified."

I think you may be looking at this all wrong, Dominic. Consider: Since Murray has taken office, no officers have been found to have been unjustified in any force reviews!

Aren't you missing an adjective between 'Seattle cops who shoot' and 'people'? After all, dear Dominic, it is one of their job requirements on occasions and more often than not, other lives (even numerous lives) are saved by doing so.

Or, just turn your anti-SPD snideness down one a notch, okay?

What adjective were you thinking? If none have been reviewed, it doesn't need an adjective.

@2) The use-of-force reviews are mandatory in all officer-involved shootings. These reviews may absolutely find that the shootings are justified, but those reviews aren't happening. That's a problem. Read the article.

@4, Phoebe doesn't read, she just plays reaction cards out of her very short stack.

Gee, where I have I heard about dictators with soaring poll numbers and collapsing economies before? Hmm.

One thing he says is absolutely true, though: the pro-Russian people of eastern Ukraine are most likely native Ukrainians. Most of the people in eastern Ukraine are pro-Russian, Russian speakers. An "invasion" narrative that doesn't feature actual Russian troops doesn't fit the facts. All of the former Soviet satellites have very large populations of Russian-speaking ethnic Russians, many of whom were happier being part of the Motherland. That was the whole point of moving large numbers of Russians into those countries in the first place 80 years ago. And that's what's got places like Lithuania nervous.

I wonder if the American Left's love affair with the traitor Snowden is going to cool after watching him tenderly caress Putin's butthole.

So Dan Lewis is leaving? Sadly they will replace that empty suit with a younger version of him. Pretty on camera with as little brain power as needed to present the "news"

@4, #5. I read the article. I'm talking about your word play with the lede. There's a difference.
However, it's very revealing how you both mistook what I said.

Sheesh @7, the answer is no. There is no adjective missing.

@7, revealing of what? Your ignorance? Your bubble? Your inability to follow a thread of thought? What adjective would YOU suggest? The point is, no police shooting has been investigated; it doesn't matter what kind of adjective you want to apply; even "guilty as hell, had it coming, good riddance, the little fucker" warrants a review, but there are no reviews anymore.

These TV news shows have been coasting by carrying local anchorpeople from three decades or more as their audience (witnessed by wall to wall pharma ads) aged along with them +20 years.

They've been bringing in the Mary Nams, but I keep wondering -- who is watching them? Or do the old ladies at the Alzheimer's Ranch think, "oh, what a nice young lady".

I can't see it going on for much longer as is.

Regarding the Ukraine and Holden's love for American Exceptionalism, how's about the truth once in awhile, huh?……
