Today in Thea-tray: ACT Theatre has announced the winner of its 2014 new play award—Jason Grote, author of 1001 and Maria/Stuart (and writer for TV shows Mad Men, Smash, and Hannibal). The play in question is Shostakovich, a study of one genius's attempt to write brilliant (and sometimes subversive) music while surviving Stalin. As his reward, Grote will receive $2,500 and a chance to workshop the play with the staffing, artistic, and production fees paid for. The performance dates are May 12 and 13 at 7 pm.

"I want to make sure that everything I do inspires other people into action" This is a pretty great interview with Kshama Sawant.

How's Your Humanities, Bro?: President Obama has named a new chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities. His name is William "Bro" Adams. Obama said, presumably with a straight face: "Bro brings demonstrated leadership and decades of experience as an administrator at major universities and liberal arts institutions. His clear dedication and lifelong commitment to the humanities make him uniquely qualified to lead the nation’s cultural agency." Bro is also apparently a Vietnam vet, a college dropout, and a Fulbright scholar.

The Amazon 3D Phone Is Coming: According to rumors. The Amazon phone (in both 3D and 2D varieties) has been coming for a long time, but these rumors seem a bit more exact.

Bad Library News: "Nationally, from 2001 to May 2013, the number of librarians fell by 9 percent."

The Good News: Louisiana may be getting an official state book!

The Bad News: If state legislators approve it, Louisiana's official state book will be the King James Bible. Come on, Louisiana! Make Confederacy of Dunces your state book, at least! It's done more for Louisiana tourism than the Bible ever has.

In a Way, Kung Fu Is the Great Gatsby of Our Time: Baz Luhrmann is in talks to produce a film adaptation of the old Kung Fu TV show.

If only he could add "go-go dancer" to the list, that would be the greatest resume ever.
