Murrysville School Knife Attack: "The dead take no selfies."

Posted by on Thu, Apr 10, 2014 at 7:44 AM

A must-read piece at The Daily Beast by Michael Daly:

The dead take no selfies.

So there might well never have been the remarkable selfie that 16-year-old Nate Scimio took after his heroism at Franklin Regional High School if he had faced a gun rather than two knives on Wednesday morning.... As of the end of the day, none of the 21 victims had died. Scimio had managed to escape serious injury even as he shielded several students from the attacker and took a moment to pull a fire alarm to alert everyone else. A fellow student named Trinity McCool credited him on Twitter with saving her and a friend. “Without Nate, me and Lindsay would’ve been injured and there’s not enough words to describe how much of a hero he is,” McCool tweeted.

Scimio survived to take a picture of himself in Children’s Hospital. The photo that might never have been shows him holding up his camera with his right hand while he points with his left to the bandaged wound on his right forearm. “Chillin’ at Childrens,” he captioned the selfie he posted on Instagram. Nobody could have outrun a bullet if the suspect had been armed with a gun, but anybody who managed to stay outside the reach of the blades escaped injury.

Scimio most likely had instinctively thrown up that now wounded arm to ward off the attacker’s blade. The impulse would have done nothing to deflect a bullet, which would likely have torn through his arm and into him. He then might have been quite literally chillin’ at the morgue.

Go read the whole thing.

In the previous thread about this, some ding-dong suggested that paramedics, or Chinese people, or British people, all apparently old hands in dealing with the after-effects of stabbings, might consider knives to be more deadly than guns.

25 people died in mass school stabbings in China between 2010 and 2012; that's 25 out of 1.3 billion. Compare that to 55 deaths in mass school shootings in the same period in the US out of a population of 315 million.

Gun fetishists seem to always bring up the UK as some knife-crazy dystopia where the cowardy-custard population lives in fear of the blade, unable to defend themselves by standing their ground and shooting people who look like criminals, passers-by and anyone else who gets in the way. Let me copypaste my comment from the previous thread:

In 2012 in the UK (population approx. 60 million), there were:

29,503 offences involving knives or other sharp instruments (this includes anything sharp; broken glass and screwdrivers are the most common).

4,490 hospital admissions for wounds caused by knives or other sharp instruments.

193 murders involving knives or other sharp instruments.

So, two-thirds of one percent of all crime in the UK involving knives or other sharp instruments results in death. And less than five percent of all hospital admissions in the UK for wounds caused by knives or other sharp instruments result in death.

In 2012, there were as many gun murders in the US every two-and-a-bit days than there were knife/sharp instrument murders in the UK in the entire year.

In summary, I believe that guns are more deadly than knives.

@1, of course if all these children and chinese people were required to have guns, none of these stabbings ever would have happened.

@3

If anyone had a discussion yesterday, you weren't involved in it. Your only comment was a snidy drive-by that implied that a mass attack with a bladed weapon in a school has as much in common with a hollandaise sauce recipe than with fucking school shootings.

@1 I don't think there's any doubt that firearms are more deadly than bladed weapons. Were this not so wars would still be fought w/ swords and axes. The US has a higher murder rate than any other modern nation and I think the widespread availability of firearms is one of the reasons for this. On the other hand sporadic efforts to abolish gun ownership at the state and local level have proven worse than useless. Private ownership of handguns in Washington, DC was pretty much abolished in 1975. By 1990 that city had the highest murder rate in the nation.

@5: Yup.
@6: That's because state borders are open borders, and so there is LITERALLY NOTHING to stop people from buying a gun in the next state over and bringing it home with them.

@1, that's right. I was about to respond to that foolish notion before work interfered and snatched up my time. We also discussed this issue when a deranged prick in China attacked school children with a knife the same day a deranged prick in America attacked school children at Sandy Hook with a gun. Recall which of those two events had zero fatalities.

The comments on Instagram are depressing - various children claiming that the schoolkids should have been able to overpower the knife-wielder and 'beat him up.' They obviously think violence in real life is actually like violence in the movies.

@10: Kind of like all the commenters suggesting that the police officer who shot the bank robber recently should have just shot him once in the legs or simply wrestled the knife away from him.

Fantasy world violence.

@7 Yup, which means that in order to be at all effective gun laws have to be imposed at the federal level. Gun laws that are unacceptable in gun-loving real America won't get through congress. So the only way you gun grabbing liberals will ever make any progress on this issue is if you convince people in pro-gun states that your not out to take away their military style assault weapons, . . . um I mean take away their freedom.

ding dong here!

Can you say anything with out an ad hominem attack?

My point about the mentioning the uk was attached the earlier mention of knives not being so great. Stab wounds will kill very very fast. Hence it being mentioned in the context of "ask an EMT" but if you want to just call people names and drop random quotes, lets look at how wonderful the land of gun control and tossers is for an average citizen:

"Britons suffer 1,158,957 violent crimes per year, which works out at 2,034 per 100,000 residents. The U.S., meanwhile, has a rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, which is lower than France’s, at 504"

Most deaths linked to "gun crime" in the states from non impartial sources conflate suicides "children" who are over 18 and high crime areas like the blighted dense inner city ( read Chicago ) to attempt to make the national average look scary and terrible. like you did above.

@13, well, what did you expect? Saying that there are 9,000 gun-related homicides a year (most of which involve gang-bangers, drug dealers, or other ne'er-do-wells) just doesn't have the same impact.

These people don't use actual facts for a reason — appealing to emotions is generally more successful.

Fucking come on this isn't journalism.

But hey, #13 and #14 have cracked the case!

Those kindergarteners killed in Sandy Hook, and the white teenagers at Colombine WERE ACTUALLY BLACK 19 YEAR OLD GANG BANGERS IN DISGUISE!

As was the teacher and other adult killed. SO THEY ALL BROUGHT THEIR MURDERS ON THEMSELVES BECAUSE THEY WERE ACTUALLY BLACK 19 YEAR OLD GANG BANGERS IN DISGUISE!

And not only that, but the WHITE SHOOTERS WERE ALSO ACTUALLY BLACK 19 YEAR OLD GANG BANGERS IN DISGUISE!

So everybody forget your silly empathy and shit like that, as well as facts and stuff, because ACCORDING TO #13 AND #14, ALL VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. -- AS WELL AS THE SHOOTERS -- ARE ACTUALLY BLACK 19 YEAR OLD GANG BANGERS IN DISGUISE!

WHO DON'T DESERVE TO LIVE, ACCORDING TO #13 AND #14.

CORRECTION:

I may be overstating the case, because I'm sure #13 and #14 would stipulate that SOME VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. -- AS WELL AS THE SHOOTERS -- ARE ACTUALLY BROWN 19 YEAR OLD GANG BANGERS IN DISGUISE!

WHO DON'T DESERVE TO LIVE, ACCORDING TO #13 AND #14.

I don't think it is only the prevalence of guns in the US that leads to the high homicide rate (yes, there is lots of violent crime in Europe as well, but our murder rates are way lower than American murder rates). If crime was just caused by the guns available, Switzerland and Canada would have much higher murder rates.

The problem is American culture. Violence and vigilantism as problem-solving strategies are much more accepted than in civilised countries, even among so-called "liberals".

@13

I stand by my analysis of you as a ding-dong, and a prize ding-doing at that.

The UK Home Office defines violent crime as being any crime against the person and any sexual offence. In 2010, less than half of the crimes against the person resulted in an injury and less than a quarter of the sexual offences were rape.

The FBI (you used the FBI figures) count only four offences as violent: non-negligent murder/manslaughter; aggravated assault; robbery; and forcible rape.

If the UK Home Office defined violent crime the way the FBI do, the figures would be very similar.

Anyway, my point isn't that the UK or the US is any more violent than the other. I honestly don't care either way. I was just making clear that: A, knifes are far, far less deadly than guns and mass-murder attempts with knifes will almost always be less deadly than mass-murder attempts with guns; & B, gun control has not lead to out-of-control violent crime, with or without knives, in the UK.
