There's a lot of echo and clang to "Where Are You?," the new song from Calgary's Chad VanGaalen.

If anything, the echoing and clanging overwhelm the plaintive refrain, but that seems to be the point. To accompany the song, VanGaalen has assembled B&W and color images from previous videos (last summer, he directed a trippy video for his fellow Canadian label mates METZ).

My favorite bit involves a gold tooth-like creature that slides its posterior over the bristles of a toothbrush until minty foam forms around him. I have no idea what VanGaalen is up to here, but the tiny fellow appears to be having a fine time, so I'm all for it. The rest of the video follows a similarly strange and twisted path as insects turn into carnivorous plants and astronauts turn into space aliens.

For his fifth full-length, VanGaalen took inspiration from the Flying Burrito Brothers and Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius's graphic novel The Incal. He has also been working on an animated sci-fi film called Translated Log of Inhabitants, and some of the music on Shrink Dust comes from the score.

Sub Pop releases Shrink Dust on Apr 29. VanGaalen plays the Tractor Tavern on June 21 and weekend #2 of Sasquatch! Festival in George, WA on July 5.
