As we continue on into this Congressional midterm election year, during which you're sure to hear all kinds of bad things said about the economy, here's something to remember:

The Treasury Department reported on Thursday that the deficit for 2013 dropped to $680 billion, from about $1.1 trillion the previous year.

In nominal terms, that is the smallest deficit since 2008.

Even so, Republicans will certainly be running this fall on reckless federal spending (although the deficit is down) and the need to repeal Obamacare (although Obamacare stands to help reduce the deficit).
