The long vacant lot at the southwest corner of 23rd and Union (they tore down the building that housed Ms. Helen's Soul Food and a mosque years ago) has been sold and is about to be developed. Puget Sound Business Journal has the story and an image of what the building will look like. And it seems like these same developers are eyeing other nearby properties as well.
Lake Union Partners bought the lot at the southwestern corner of the intersection on Tuesday and plans to build a six-story apartment building with retail at the street level. Construction could start this spring, said Scott Roberts of Lake Union Partners.
“We’re so optimistic that we’ve tied up the property a block to the east at 24th and Union,” Roberts said. Lake Union Partners wants to finalize the purchase of the property at the northwestern corner of the intersection, where an approximately 40-unit residential project is planned.
Lake Union Partners is known for developing mixed-use residential projects and filling the commercial space with local, home-grown entrepreneurs. That is what the company did with a recently completed project at 19th Avenue East and East Mercer Street on Seattle’s Capitol Hill, where noted Seattle restaurateur Linda Derschang opened a neighborhood café, Tallulah’s.
And there will undoubtedly be more big changes coming to this area. Under the current rules, this intersection will be one of the few areas in the central city that will allow retail pot stores.
And, lastly, beleaguered Med Mix has left the scene, with the arson-damaged building finally under repairs and looking for a new tenant.
