The Sunday Morning News

Posted by on Sun, Jan 19, 2014 at 9:40 AM

I've Said It Once And I'll Say It Again: If the media is going to keep labeling Council member Kshama Sawant a socialist, they need to label the other politicians capitalists. Jen posted an interview last week on how Republicans use coded language to stir up support among racist segments of their base. It's little different when the Seattle Times, Seattle Weekly, and Seattle P-I all routinely use some combination of the words "fiery" and "socialist" in their reporting on Sawant—but they never use words like "staid" and "capitalist" to describe her colleagues at City Hall. It's code for: this person is not like the others, she's not mainstream, and she's a threat. The same terms were used by American journalists to marginalize Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.

Belltown Fight Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting, According to KING 5: "Investigators believe this incident does not involve the NFC Championship game or anyone wearing football jerseys."

"Seeds of Genocide" in the Central African Republic, Says United Nations Official: Just wondering, where are all the "humanitarian interventionists" who were clamoring for an attack on Syria now?

Oh Look, Another Program To Help People Save Their Homes from Foreclosure That Failed: The program was "no match for the persistence and legal power of banks intent on collecting fees and racking up foreclosures."

How American Corruption Derailed Haiti's Earthquake Recovery: People try to blame Haiti's travails on internal corruption, but we've either legalized and willfully ignored corruption within our own foreign aid system.

Rodney Tom Strikes Again: The state house has already advanced the DREAM Act, but the Senate Majority Leader and Senate Republicans are signalling they won't bring the bill to the floor for a vote. That could hurt them come election day.

Kiev Rocked by Riots: It's protesters using sticks and setting buses on fire, upset with proposals that would curb dissent, versus police using pepper spray and flash grenades.

Frankly, Ansel, the notion of you calling out other journalists for being ideologically biased is a bit rich.

I think they're all incestuous. Calling another journalist out benefits them both. It's a get rich-get rich situation.

The detectives were running after an armed suspect and shot him while running away. They feared for their lives I presume ?

I presume there's a long history of The Stranger referring to CMKshama in stories while never mentioning socialism ?

Routinely labeling all other pols "staid capitalist" would be fair, but it would wear thin soon enough.

I wonder if ANY of them would object?

Socialist elected officials are a rarity in the United States, so it makes sense that the press would go out of the way to label Sawant as one. There is no need to label non-socialist elected officials as such because that is the norm. When they says Sawant is 'fiery' that is a polite way of saying she lacks the tact and social grace characteristic of most politicians.

ah, 'guilt by lack of association' ...cunning! if you're not at one extreme you must be labeled the opposite. but just to show my painful ignorance, hasn't Ms Sawant herself declared her politics as socialist? (...not that there's anything wrong with that)

The media didn't marginalize Hugo Chavez; he did that all by himself.

@2, you bring up a good point.

How come our media isn't asking if Sawant is an evil dictator?

After all, she was democratically elected, just like Chavez. And wasn't it just a couple of days ago that she had her jack-booted thugs in the Seattle Police Department arrest and silence one of her loudest critics? Clearly she hates America and its principals of free speech.

@5

For Seattle to elect people they feel represent them is how it should work.

And when your crackpot notions about how people behave economically have the results socialist policy always has, you have only yourselves to blame.

@4 If there is probable cause to believe that the bad guy has committed a crime involving the infliction or threatened infliction of serious physical harm then the cops can shoot him simply to prevent him from escaping. You can read more about that here:

Hey Herz?

Here's some free advice, kiddo. You're going to have biases as a journalist. They may even motivate a level of passion and dedication that makes a journalist a catalyst for needed change. But only if you trust your audience and the essential truth of your beliefs.

If you have to lie about, ignore or distort facts to support your beliefs, you won't convince yourself never mind your audience.

Edward R Morrow had Joe McCarthy on his radio show. He gave that bombastic ass time to speak uninterrupted because he knew what you don't. Either truth supported him and his idea of what America was or it didn't, and his listeners were smart enough to see through McCarthy's bs.

You're just a kid, maybe 20 or a bit older. Either you'll grow up and become, potentially, a journalist or you'll stay a whiny lying propagandist like the rest of those writing for the Stranger.

Pardon me, but didn't Sawant run as a Socialist? I believe she "labeled" herself.

Most media do refer to pols by their party affiliations, which is fair and is similar to how they are labeling Sawant. But can Stranger writers please use "media are", especially when explicitly referring to multiple kinds of media platforms (unless its only folks in the medium of print referring to her as a socialist).

Sawant is a member of the Socialist Alternative Party. That's the name of her party: Socialist Alternative. So she gets called a Socialist just as members of the Republican Party get called Republicans and members of the Democratic Party get called Democrats.

That is, unless you want to argue that Sawant be called a Socialist Alternativist. Would you prefer that?

(Also, there's nothing non-capitalist about Socialist Alternative, but I'm sure you knew that.)

If the media is going to keep labeling Council member Kshama Sawant a socialist,...

Well said, Mr. H., well said!

The newsy whorescum should refer to her properly, given her superior educational background compared to the hacks and flacks she'll be working with: the savant Sawant.

Failing that, they should, as you partially noted, refer to themselves as capitalist pigs and running dog lackeys of Wall Street and the Community Development Roundtable.

Good day.....

Speaking of the running dogs and lackeys of Wall Street, neocon conservative Gary Becker, another pseudo-econ from the University of Chicago, originally financed (and probably still is, by the Rockefeller family) who is mistakenly referred to as a "Nobel prize winning economist" spews forth on the necessity of organ harvesting (I don't mind them harvesting his organs, and to repeat for the nth time, no member of the Nobel family ever endowed such a prize, nor does any member recognize such a prize, it is the Swedish Central Bank's Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Nobel --- completely unathorized except by the central banksters):

With all due respect and no levity-

Get help. Anzel Herz is a misguided kid with the naiveté and misplaced passions of a kid. You're a very disturbed grown man (I'm guessing, but gender matters less than your paranoid delusional worldview in this context) with only so much time. With psychiatric care you could enjoy what's left of your time. Or you could live in your frightened twilight world where THEY are out to get you.

If not for your own sake then for that of parents or siblings who care about you, get help.

The reason why Sawant is labeled is evident in this thread. The job of journalists is to get people upset. Upset, bothered people buy their news. People aren't interested in buying stories of hope, of happiness. Nothing bothers Americans like the phrase "socialist."

There's plenty of different stories in the post, but what has brought out the wingnuts & their detractors? "Socialism!" It's like a magic button or pull-string. Say the magic word and you've upset the delicate American sensibility. Squawk! Squawk!

If Sawant is going to "accomplish" as much as Chavez in Venezuela, we're all fucked. I'd recommend hoarding toilet paper, except that I don't think that's going to happen.
