State Department Issues Warning for US Travelers to Sochi Olympics

Posted by on Fri, Jan 10, 2014 at 1:48 PM

Max Seddon at BuzzFeed posted the newest State Department statement on travel to Sochi for the Olympics. It's a mixture of the usual overcautious State Department warnings and some other, more foreboding undertones, including a warning about the possibility of terrorism and a suggestion that U.S. citizens "avoid large crowds in areas that lack enhanced security measures." And then there's this:

LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER (LGBT) ISSUES: In June 2013, Russia’s State Duma passed a law banning the “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” to minors. The U.S. government understands that this law applies to both Russian citizens and foreigners in Russia. Russian citizens found guilty of violating the law could face a fine of up to 100,000 rubles ($3,100). Foreign citizens face similar fines, up to 14 days in jail, and deportation. The law makes it a crime to promote LGBT equality in public, but lacks concrete legal definitions for key terms. Russian authorities have indicated a broad interpretation of what constitutes “LGBT propaganda,” and provided vague guidance as to which actions will be interpreted by authorities as “LGBT propaganda.” LGBT travelers should review the State Department’s LGBT Travel Information page.

From the US Govt LGBT travel info page:

"You’re more likely to experience difficulties in rural areas, so exercise discretion"

Exactly like the USA, then.

At this point, I wouldn't take an all-expenses-paid grand prize to Sochi. For one thing....where? For another thing...the middle of nowhere. When the IOC announced Sochi as the 2014 host about six years ago, I thought, great - having a Winter Games in a Russian summer resort. And sorry, but it doesn't have anywhere near the glamour of an Alpine location or somewhere in the Rockies or a Scandinavian site. Hell, Siberia sounds more glamorous than Sochi.

And then, of course, Putin and his crew had to start mouthing off about LGBT (human) rites. So, yeah, if you are an American athlete who has trained for four years on a bobsled or on a pair of ice skates or for the biathalon, then go get your medal, my brother and sister. Me, though? Ima be home watching you on TV.

@2 I think you meant "rights"

"Russian LGBT rites" means going gay-bashing, I think.

Fuck Russia. Their Olympics are going to be a waste of time. They want to be "important"in the world, then step up to the plate and get with the times and quit discriminating against your own gay people.
