The Morning News

The United States of It's So Cold I Might Die: Polar vortex brings dangerously low temperatures to eastern U.S. (Also: Polar Vortex 101.)

Malevolent Malingering: Scores of retired NYC police, fire and corrections officers arrested for 9/11 disability fraud. ("The Manhattan district attorney's office accuses the retired workers, along with their lawyers and doctors, of faking work-related stress, including feigned psychiatric disorders related to 9/11," reports the ABC.)

Sidelined for Sochi: Injured knee will keep skier Lindsey Vonn from defending her downhill title at the winter Olympics.

Christmas in January: Syria hands over first batch of chemical weapons material.

To Protect and Serve: Parents call cops for help with schizophrenic son, cops shoot son dead.

Antisocial Media: Dallas police chief fires employees via Twitter.

Troubled Princess: Princess Cristina of Spain faces court over allegations of money laundering and tax fraud.

Mon Dieu!: Workers at French tire factory slated for closure take bosses hostage, demand "enormous amounts of money." (As The Guardian reports, "The 'kidnapping' was carried out at the Goodyear plant in north Amiens that was at the centre of an international spat a year ago after an American businessman called the workers there lazy.") UPDATE: Bosses freed!

Blast from the Past: Mary K. Letourneau is under arrest (this time for failing to appear in court on a driving charge).

Also, Remember That Guy Who Slapped a Baby on a Plane?: He's been sentenced to eight months in federal prison.

Blue Pitch-Black Monday: Power outage leaves 6000+ on Capitol Hill in the dark.

Always a Foot in His Mouth: Eliot Spitzer horrifies Jamaica with his public sucking of his girlfriend's feet.

Finally, here's video of CNN's Chris Cuomo interviewing Dennis Rodman and the ten former NBA players who travelled with him to North Korea to play a basketball game on Kim Jong-Un's birthday. When Cuomo asks Rodman about the morality of such a trip, Rodman loses it. (I do not think Kim Jong-Un is a good influence on Rodman, who speaks more and more like an unhinged despot every day.)

Here in Maryland, it was 0 degrees on my way into work, and we are bracing for a windchill assisted -20 tomorrow.

Luckily I work in an office, but my 64 year old father will be out there pouring concrete all day.

Guy owns a third of the company, refuses to stop finishing the concrete himself.

Jesus fuck is Rodman stupid. That same assessment is written all over the face of the guy to Rodman's right, that tries to take over for him at one point.

Enough is enough!

I have had it with these monkey-fighting babies on this Monday-to-Friday plane!

Why is Mr. Rodman not in jail?

Letourneau in jail for a driving charge? Please tell me the car was at least a 1996 model.

I think Eliot Spitzer is sexy as all get out. He's dreamy. And he loves sex while wearing black knee socks! Since he also loves hookers, maybe he'd be willing to go into straight porn? Oh, please Eliot, fuck for your fans. All the toes you can suck AND get paid!

What? No mention of the dead conjoined whale calfskin discovered in Baja? http://io9.com/conjoined-gray-whales-dis…

That piece on 9/11 fraud cases was one of the more credulous and accusatory crime items I have ever seen.

Given all the ways the 9/11 responders have been dicked over, while we "honor the service", I must admit that my knee jerk reaction is to laugh off the possibility of mere millions of dollars of unqualified benefits disbursed, of which my portion would be fractions of a penny, especially when the proof offered is minor administrative things like some cops debilitated by stress still maintained their gun permits.

What a load of shoddy, unbalanced reporting!

"So Cold I Might Die?" people have died. Tasteless, as usual.

the internets posit that Rodman is an unwitting/drugged-up bug mule for the nsa. given some of the crazy crap they've been up to of late i guess i wouldn't be surprised if that was the scheme (code-name: 'deepdunk')

I didn't realize you'd inherited Emily Post's old job. Congratulations.

Just because someone was really good at sports, doesn't mean we should continue to pay attention to them.

@13 -- You might think he was just really good at sports ... but you forget he was also a world-class attention whore!

Really lame to link to the NY Post. That smear piece is designed to force the new Democratic mayor to fire his press person. It's the usual Ailes/Murdoch slime job.

Maybe the SPD should take a clue from Dallas and start posting their discipline. At least then we'd know if they were actually doing anything about complaints...

Anyone who thinks that Rodman is acting crazier than usual lately isn't very familiar with his usual level of crazy. Irrational outbursts? That's kind of his trademark.

You are really annoying, Schmader, with your CNN-Cuomo-Rodman piece...

The real news story was why would CNN fire an ethical young lady reporter for trying to actually report what was really taking place in Bahrain (we once called that the news!)?

And how many other reporters has CNN fired for the same reason.

When whorescum like CNN's Cuomo and Costello act accusatory, then they must answer those questions first!

To humor, collude or aid and abet the traitorous filth at CNN, Fox, CBS, NPR, etc., is unbecoming to a real journalist, but then there is a long list of swine who have been awarded a Pulitzer, so feel free to join the ranks of George Will, et al.

Kim Jong-Un's Minstrel Show

We can only hope that the gig pays enough to cover the loss of dignity and that the severance package isn't the same as others who have bored the spoiled, little dictator.
