Seattle Police Still Need Your Help Tracking Down Neighbours Nightclub Arsonist

Posted by on Mon, Jan 6, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Nearly a week following the New Year's Eve arson at Neighbours Nightclub, there's very little new information to report.

"The Seattle Fire Investigator determined origin and cause of the fire," Seattle Fire Department public information officer Kyle Moore responded by email. "We determined on scene that it was an intentionally set fire in the stairwell. We turned the case over to the SPD’s Arson Bomb Squad who conducts the criminal investigation into the matter."

Seattle Police Department spokesperson Detective Renée Witt says that there are no new updates to report, but that they are still asking the public to call the Arson-Bomb tip line if they have any information: 206-684-8680.

That's the way these things work. Once the fire investigators determine it to be an arson (and pouring gasoline on the carpet and lighting it on fire was a dead giveaway), the investigation is handed over to the SPD. So if you have any information on an arson that put 750 lives at risk, give SPD a call.

Because only a handful of people were actually near the fire and there were fire escapes, I think it's far more accurate to say maybe a dozen peoples lives were at risk.

@1 - I believe they found a gas can nearby. I don't know the specifics about its location or contents, but had that ignited, it could have made things far, far worse.

Curious, how can we blame the fire on Ed Murray while praising Kshama Sawant?

This kind of thing never would have taken place under McGinn's watch or if the city had just taken over Neighbors like Sawant must surely have recommended what with being Socialist and all.

The only possible tips at this point are the friends or family of the arsonist.

Surely there were people taking pictures with their camera phone on New Years eve. Any photos, even outside or of friends could be what cracks the case! This must be punished and stopped.

@1: You seem to have an agenda for downplaying this crime, may I ask why?

No agenda, but it provides an insight into what the slog-leaders considers "significant" while at the same time only having evacuated one club and having noone get physically hurt.

And maybe if the city took the gas can registry idea more seriously then we'd be able to track down who used it in an arson attempt.

The gas can was found with a gas soaked rag hanging out of it. I think it's safe to say that this was more than just an arson, but rather a bombing attempt.... so therefore, yes, hundreds of lives were at risk.

@9: Jesus dude, a fire in a nightclub is the stuff of nightmares. This incident is getting national attention, and since Neighbors is only blocks away from Stranger HQ, of course they are going to cover it.
Pheobe's got your number.
Go grind your axe somewhere else.

Why wouldn't Neighbors have security cameras recording all over the place to catch suspicious activit...oh. Question withdrawn.

@12: Perhaps they do and SPD is reviewing them frame-by-frame as we speak, but even if they didn't not all businesses can afford them, or feel they have the need for them. It's a real shame that the owners, or any business owner, have to consider such expenses.
So, in light of this, I gather that you would not object to the SPD having general surveillance cameras on the streets?

michael strangeways 14 the fuck do you smuggle in a fucking gas can into a nightclub with a bouncer at the door? On NYE yet with heightened security concerns. And, how do you pour gasoline and light a fire without anyone noticing in a crowded nightclub on NYE?

So. Very. Odd.

@13: I want them to have cameras. I was making a "people don't want what they do in Neighbors taped" joke. It can be a raucous place.
