First the not judging gays thing, and now this:

He proved unpredictable again on Wednesday, when he went off script to include atheists in his call for peace, rare for a Catholic leader.

“I invite even nonbelievers to desire peace,” he said. “Let us all unite, either with prayer or with desire, but everyone, for peace.”

It's bigger deal theologically than you might think, since it A) acknowledges that atheists really exist (you wouldn't believe the number of believers who don't take claims of non-belief seriously), and B) implicitly decouples morality from religious faith. If Pope Francis is inviting nonbelievers to join him in acting morally, then he obviously believes that we can act morally without believing in God. (Of course, he's right!) That's pretty big, coming from the Pope.
