The Minimum Wage Isn't Going to Raise Itself: Seattle's newest council member, Kshama Sawant, held a press conference in City Hall yesterday, during which she doubled-down on her campaign promise and pledged to pass a citywide $15/hour minimum wage in 2014.
Here's Some Decisive Non-Action: Meanwhile, the rest of Seattle's city council passed a resolution to form a committee to explore how to perhaps help victims of the foreclosure crisis, someday.
Boeing's Gone A-Courtin': This week, Boeing is narrowing its list of possible alternative sites to build its 777X jet. Washington is, of course, one of 22 states that have submitted proposals, although we're the ones with the uppity union and the company's number one criteria seems to be a cheap workforce with a broken spirit.
Russia's Hallmark Moment: Jailed members of Pussy Riot and Greenpeace activists could be released today, as Russia grants amnesty to "invalids, veterans, minors, pregnant women and women with young children... [and] those charged with hooliganism" in an attempt to improve their international image before the Sochi Winter Olympics. And if that doesn't work, they're renaming the gulag "Club Med Russia."
The Curse of Sochi: Speaking of Russia, apparently the beloved Olympic torch relay for the 2014 Winter Olympics is cursed, as well as homophobic. That isn't going to stop President Obama from sending openly gay athletes over to win some gold.
Morsi on Trial: Egyptian's former president will stand trial for terrorism, in addition to the fraud and incitement of violence charges he's currently being tried for.
A Turd in the International Punch Bowl: An Indian diplomat was arrested in New York on visa fraud charges after allegedly submitting falsified documents to obtain a work visa for her housekeeper. Human rights activists are upset about the housekeeper, who was allegedly underpaid, while the diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, along with the entire country of India, is pissed that she was arrested at all (the woman gave "incessant assertions of immunity") let alone that she was strip-searched in jail. Now India is calling for her unconditional release and for all charges to be dropped.
Remember the Harvard Bomb Scare? The bomb threats that evacuated the college campus on Monday were allegedly made by a student trying to get out of a final. Man, I'm cringing so hard for that kid right now.
