It Took The GOP Almost Exactly Five Years to Face the Truth

Posted by on Thu, Oct 17, 2013 at 7:31 AM

Obama is really the president of this nation...

In the end, President Barack Obama got exactly what he said he wanted — a debt-limit increase, an extension of the federal government’s funding, and no overly binding strings attached — and he did it by keeping faith with his unusual watchwords: No negotiation.

Experience had taught Republicans, and even Democrats, that he would wilt. Obama had agreed to austere spending limitations and big tax cuts in past budget showdowns. And Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert joked earlier this month that the president needed a transplant of vital pieces of male anatomy to take a strong stand on the debt limit and federal spending this time around.

But Obama stood his ground, beating back GOP efforts to extract concessions such as major changes to his health care law.

It's tempting to see in all of this (the challenge, the resolve, the victory) the makings for what the future might mark as the turning point for a presidency that appeared to be heading in a direction that was leaving the race of the leader as its sole distinction.

Obama of the past two weeks had shades of the Obama that inspired me to switch from supporting Hillary in 2008.

Part of it is that he never has to face voters again.

It wasn't just that President Obama stood flat footed, it's that the entire Democratic House and Senate stood firm and did not budge or give an inch to the T'Baggers. I hope they continue to say no to the obstructionists. I'd hate to see them stand firm now and then cave in February.

I find it funny that so many liberals and conservatives ignore everything Obama has actually done in office. The list is actually impressive, but lazy and fake intellectuals like Mudede find it easier to just claim he has done nothing of note, because going with the meme is easier than doing any actual digging.

@6: You can not claim a president did nothing in office just because he was unable to enact certain sweeping reforms that you personally want. This is the way children think.

Wait, how about I answer you question in the way you always address criticism:

Sorry Charles, but I am a man of the planet, and being on a different wave, you simply could not possibly understand.

@6 So, Obama is responsible for 130 years of neoliberalism and corruption in the stock market?

Obama held fast because he had no other option. Giving in wouldn't have been just a personal defeat but also diminished the office of the Presidency. He was not going to let that happen.
I am curious about what pressure finally made Boehner act so that Obama didn't have to either invoke the 14th or have the Treasury mint the coins, but I doubt I'll be alive when that makes it out.

I think Boehner must have woken up next to Ann Coulter's disembodied head.

@8: Haha, perfect!

@9: As far as I can tell, that is what is being said. Since Obama could not undo over 100 years of institutionalized and ingrained political corruption in eight years, with the most intransigent and partisan do-nothing congress ever, he accomplished absolutely nothing.

If Obama stood his ground, does that mean he will be acquitted of shooting the House Republicans? Or does that only work in Florida?
