Is there some other message that John Boehner expects middle-of-the-road voters to be taking from this debacle?
The past 16 days have been mainly about Republican House leaders demonstrating delusional thinking, reckless disregard for the welfare of people around the globe, and an inability to build working coalitions. Even the Wall Street Journal now sees an unintelligent series of blunders.
Worse, the entire time there's been an easy out: Abandon all the unachievable demands and just call a vote in the House on the simple question of whether to re-open the government and raise the debt ceiling.
For most of the last 16 days, such a vote would have passed with support from Republicans and Democrats, and would have immediately ended both the shutdown and the flirtation with financial disaster. Now, here we are, with one day left.
Maybe Boehner will finally lead the House toward a vote on something today.
