It's part of an annual look at crime across the country. According to the FBI, the overall violent crime rate in the United States was up slightly in 2012, by .07 percent. At the same time, property crime in this country dropped by .9 percent, marking the 10th consecutive year of decreases in that category.

Here in Seattle, the number of burglaries decreased from 2011 to 2012. But, over the same period the FBI sees "slight increases in the numbers of murders/non-negligent manslaughters and robberies, and increases in the numbers of rapes, aggravated assaults, larceny thefts and motor vehicle thefts."
