George Zimmerman In Police Custody After "Domestic Incident Involving a Gun" UPDATE: Zimmerman Is a Free Man

Posted by on Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 1:45 PM

ABC News says:

George Zimmerman is being held by police after a domestic incident involving a gun, police said today.

There's not much more information than that right now, but here's a tweet from AP editor Will Lester:

Here is a local news station's report.

UPDATE 12:35 PM: And here's CNN, which says there was an "apparent domestic altercation," and that a gun was found in the home, but was "not a part of the altercation."

UPDATE 1:40 PM: ThinkProgress posted the 911 call to SoundCloud. Shellie Zimmerman says George Zimmerman punched her father, broke an iPad, and threatened them both. Here's the call:

ThinkProgress also reports that "Police Chief Steve Bracknell said, '[Shellie Zimmerman and her father] both have declined to press charges against George Zimmerman. We have no victim, no crime.'" Zimmerman is free to go, but police have kept his gun.

With luck his soon to be ex-wife will file for an order of protection, and a judge will grant it (they almost always do) then under the federal Brady Law Zimmerman will be barred from possessing a firearm.

I wonder if the dispatcher knew who was involved. She calls Mrs. Zimmerman by her first name a few times, but it's not clear beyond that.

So it sure sounds like Shellie and dad were really afraid. Either they're going to take care (shoot, presumably in self-defense) of Zimmerman themselves later on, or they're like all those other dv victims who think things are going to change after this.

if the stress in Ms. Zimmerman's voice is faked, then she should be an award winning actress. Not saying it's impossible, but it sure sounds real.

Hours later, however, the story had changed. Police said they found no gun on Zimmerman’s person and Shellie Zimmerman and her father, David Dean, had decided not to seek any charges against Zimmerman. Hudson said none of the witnesses in the case saw a gun either, so “as of right now, a gun is not part of the equation.”

Deputy Police Chief Colin Morgan said officers did NOT recover a gun, and Bracknell said Shellie Zimmerman later dropped her claim that a gun was involved.

"Domestic violence can't be invoked because she has changed her story and says she didn't see a firearm," Bracknell said.

The dispute "was between him and his wife and her father,'' Morgan said. "There were some allegations that there had been an assault, but we could NOT confirm any of it.''

@57: The end result of that logic is that everything is conjecture, and there is no truth at all.

Fact is, you are making things up based upon what you want to be true, while Rob is assuming the police report probably contains more truth than your fantasy. Perhaps the police report is wrong, and your fantasy is correct, but Rob is on much steadier ground than you.

The Zimmerman case has become a lightning rod for anyone to simply vent and make up scenarios that confirm their beliefs. It is very odd.

#58 is a good example: the ME is suing for wrongful termination, and the commenter makes the immediate leap that it was because the prosecuters wanted a black mark on their record, because obviously Zimmerman was guilty.

It is good practice to be very suspicious of any idea you have that confirms what you want to be true, but there is little to no evidence for.

@59,

I guess you didn't look at the linked article:

"Through his high-profile attorney, he claims the medical examiner, state attorney's office, and Sanford Police Department were all biased against Martin." quoth the ME.

I absolutely, positively will admit to bias against that cheatin', lying, murderer (my call on the last, I can pull up the links on the other 2). However, I was merely reporting what I'd read about the ME and the iPad. If you dont like the mass media sources I read, *shrugs*.

@59: No, the end result of that logic is that in this specific instance, I choose to believe my own conjecture. Since more than a few quasi-trolls on Slog chose to believe that Martin started the fight with Zimmerman with no evidence to back it up, I don't see why I can't believe Zimmerman's wife is lying her perjuring ass off with some evidence to back it up (her history of lying to protect her husband, that she initially said he had a gun). At least I have sense enough to call it- "it" being conjecture- by its right name.

Rob in Baltimore 62
61, The evidence to back up that Martin probably started the fight:
At the end of the 911 call Zimmerman didn't know where Martin was. Zimmerman made arrangements to meet the responding police officer at a specified location.

Eye witness saw Martin on top of Zimmerman, beating him.

The back of Zimmerman's clothes were encrusted with dirt and debris.

Zimmerman had wounds to his face and back of the head.

Martin's only wounds from the fist fight were on his knuckles. (Maybe Zimmerman beat Martin's knuckles with his face?)
http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uplo…

If someone has overpowered you, on top of you, beating you in the face, slamming your head into the pavement, and you have a gun, what would you do?
Posted by Rob in Baltimore http://www.wishbookweb.com/ on September 12, 2013 at 12:59 PM · Report this
lolorhone 63
@62: That is only evidence that Martin was winning the fight, not that he started it. And since he was following Martin for no legitimate reason anyway, whose to say he didn't spot him again (or just ignore the police and continue to look for him) and initiate the physical confrontation? As for Martin being on top of him, see the link @58.

@62: BTW, even with your highly unconvincing "evidence" of Martin as instigator, it's still conjecture on your part, just like it's conjecture on mine.

63, He wasn't following Martin. He didn't know were Martin was. You didn't answer what you would do if someone had overpowered you, had you pinned to the ground, was beating you in the face, slamming your head on the pavement, and you had a gun. As for the link at 58, we have a guy who changed his story now that he's not under oath.

According to your conjecture, you believe that not only Shelly Zimmerman is lying, but also her father, all the witnesses, and all the police on the scene? Really? Again, tighten you tinfoil hat.

lolorhone 66
@65: "Again, tighten your tinfoil hat." If you're going to be a condescending dick, be grammatically sound or it ruins the effect.

-As for Zimmerman, not following him hardly means he was not looking for him.
-To answer your question, I would not stalk a teenager with candy in his pocket and every right to be in the neighborhood in some highly presumptuous, highly stupid, highly racist attempt at vigilantism that the police advised against, so I wouldn't have found myself in that position to begin with.
-Bao didn't change his story from what he said on the stand; he said he wasn't asked the relevant questions, not that he perjured himself.
-No, I believe just Shelly Zimmerman and her father (and George, of course) could be lying. The gun could have been hidden from the police, since they never searched the house or his car and they declined to take out a warrant for either. The witnesses said Zimmerman was aggressive and that it seemed as if he was armed, but that they had not actually seen a gun. Shelly now claims she made a reasonable assumption that her husband was armed as he threatened her, BTW. Now considering who we're talking about, that I can believe.

From the CNN story:

From the tape: "He's in his car and he continually has his hand on his gun, and he's saying, 'Step closer.' He's just threatening all of us with his firearm," she says.

From Zimmerman's (then) lawyer: "He acted appropriately. He never took the weapon out," said Mark O'Mara, who is also a CNN legal analyst. O'Mara said he never saw the gun.

If both of these statements are true, it sounds like, even if Zimmerman never brandished the gun, the gun was still an implicit threat. If someone is talking shit to you while touching a gun, that's some scary shit, and it certainly makes him sound a bit wacko.
