The Senate Begins Voting on Syria Today

Posted by on Wed, Sep 4, 2013 at 6:00 AM

Starting with the members of the Foreign Relations Committee, who have added some new language to President Obama's proposed authorization to use military force:

The measure would set a time limit of 60 days and says the president could extend that for 30 days more unless Congress has a vote of disapproval.

Washington State's two Senators have both expressed misgivings about the idea of attacking Syria, with Patty Murray worried about "the possibility of entangling our nation in a long, drawn-out conflict” and Maria Cantwell saying she has "serious questions about the strategic goals."

This clock is the most important thing they could have done to limit the President's powers. You can't wage a ground war in 90 days, and this clock gives Congress the power to say "fuck it, I don't care how deep we got drawn in, we're getting the fuck out of here". I don't support this attack, but I'm glad that it at least has some limits. It is a pity the same limits weren't imposed on LBJ or W.

Two indecisive wishy-washy senators. Maybe they'll come to a decision after their beauty rest.

I trust Obama's judgement. I hope our senators support him.
