The Curse of 23rd and Union Appears Not to Be Dead

Posted by on Tue, Aug 13, 2013 at 9:28 AM

CD News is reporting that the fire that damaged much of the back of Med Mix on Monday morning (August 12) was not an accident...

We have an official update from the city regarding the early morning fire at Med Mix on 23rd and Union. Seattle Fire Investigators have determined the incident was an incendiary fire, meaning one that is intentionally set.
This location has a history...

On January 30, 2008, Rey Davis-Bell walked into this building (then a cheesesteak restaurant) and gunned down its owner, Degene Barecha Dashasa. The Ethiopian immigrant was not the first owner of this business to be murdered. On July 30, 2003, Troy Hackett, another owner of the cheesesteak restaurant, was shot to death in his car by an unknown person for unknown reasons. The murder happened nine blocks from this building.
[W]itnesses reported seeing Hackett's black Lexus roll slowly into a tree after the shooting.

That whole intersection is cursed. I'm pretty sure they just moved the headstones.

Is Charles going to explain how setting fire to this business honors Edwin Pratt and Treyvon Martin?

The comments on the Central District News story are pretty good.

Med Mix makes a mean cheesesteak. Maybe that's the connection.

You can take the cheesesteak outta Philly, but you can't take Philly outta the cheesesteak.

It's not a curse, it's young black males. A few more years of gentrification and 23rd and Union will be as perfectly charming as Ballard ave, Queen Anne, Madison Park. Patience is what is needed along with brave frontier folk settling and rehabilitating the area.

Yeah, was chased down by some men right by the post office first asking "yo white girl, how much for a fuck?" Then "BITCH IM TALKING TOYOU" followed by the 4 men entering their cars and screaming "LETS TAKE HER!"
Decent area ruined by a few fucking shitty people.

@8 hang in there. A few more years of gentrification and all the trash in the CD will be in Federal Way, Skyway, Renton, kent etc.

@9 always funny watching earnest white liberals suddenly endorse mysogyny, gun culture, car culture and vapid materialism when it comes out of the mouth of a black rapper.

Eh Med-Mex was sub-par at best. I'm not the only person who's gotten raw/under cooked food.

Medmix's fried chicken kicked the crap out of Ezelles. It may be Oprahs favorite but lets face it, oprah will eat anything.

The falafel was pretty good too. And the girl at the counter was rad, super friendly service.

Justice for Trayvon indeed.
Burning down a Middle Eastern eating establishment will totally stick it to the White Hispanics.

there is a small core of knuckleheads and thugs with a ghetto mentality associated with that corner, who oppose anything productive happening in the community. i wouldn't be surprised if one of the "activists" in that area was responsible for the arson.
