That's the case (and a strong one at that) made in this documentary about East Germany during the period that's known in Western economics as the Golden Age of capitalism...

The only thing bad about the documentary, which is an hour long, is the animation thing. No need for that. What's wanted is more footage of nude, sunbathing commie beauties. But when you listen to how the state responded to the natural sexual development of the youth, and how it encouraged sexual openness and equality between men and women, one begins to wonder if there are other great and progressive things that socialism accomplished. All we ever hear about are the marches and the secret agents. Sexually speaking, the socialist state was only wrong about homosexuality, but one feels that given the time and an increase in the scientific understanding of human sexuality, the state would have eventually changed its position on this normal and healthy form of love.
