Seattle city council member and mayoral candidate Bruce Harrell announced yesterday that the Public Safety Committee, which he chairs, will consider a charter amendment to make the heads of the police and fire departments subject to reconfirmation by council committee every four years. The amendment would require approval by a majority of Seattle voters.
Under the current system, the mayor appoints the two chiefs. Then council confirms the appointments just once. They remain until retirement or for life, whichever comes or goes first, without the periodic council reconfirmation required for other department heads. A discussion in council chambers of this issue is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m.
