Well, If Franzen Says So, It Must Be True

Posted by on Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Hey everyone, chill out: Jonathan Franzen says sexism isn't really much of a problem in the publishing world anymore. Glad that's settled!

Fascinating to be able to watch someone getting dumber with every word he speaks.

Well, he didn't say that there is no sexism, just that it's worst in New York City theater. Why that is relevant, I have no idea.

"The writer is the novelist" is a hilarious bio, New York Times.

See, if he had removed the first sentence, this would've been fine. It's always bad when a writer gets big and no longer allows others—or himself—to edit his work.

Kind of a weird metric if you ask me, quantity of books published doesn't say much about the existence of sexism. It only tells us that an increased number of women actually get in the door. Who the fuck is he to know anything about sexism in publishing? The fact that he is the novelist does not mean he has any expertise in judging levels of sexism. Perhaps he isn't a very analytical thinker.

Typical Stranger bullshit comment: Take what someone you dislike says, twist it to something he didn't say, then rip him a new one for it. Constant and Holden are masters at it.

@6 - Nothing compared to you, though. Have you considered writing for the Stranger?

He can't distinguish between sexism (attitude) and gender imbalance (numbers). But then novelists aren't expected to be logical.
